  • Spark plugs

Well i was checking out my spark plus yesterday in my GTI to see if they need replacing or not. Im going on a road trip soon so im getting my car already. They are factory plugs, how can i tell if they need replacing or not?

Can spark plugs like ngk-g power work in the 1.8T?

Its it possible to clean the factory plugs? and if so, how?

I suspect you will get the same again I don't think you would need to replace plugs unless you are having some engine problems. Look up some pictures of plug corrosion etc as that maybe your best bet to know if they are going to turn bad.

OEMs are expensive but last a long time (like 40K or so).

I run coppers which are cheaper and a bit better conductors but need to be changed every year or so (NGK BKR7E - 1 range colder cause of chip).

More frequent changes run risk of stripping head and wrecking coils.

if you are having problems that make you think you need to clean them then they probably need replacing, there is so little metal on the end of the conductor of performance plugs that are stock items in the turbo engines that its the fact that they erode over time that actually causes the problem rather than them getting dirty. if your not chipped id replace with NGK stock ones again and youll be good for good time. I think OEMs are usually around $17 each but these engines can be real fussy about alternative plugs

Well if you're running the NGK BKR7E (or 6E, or any copper for that matter) you should be replacing every oil change. Just be gentle with the coils and use a dilectric tune up grease, 1/4 turn past snug on the plug and you'll be just fine.

It's not about cost - copper is the best conductor but wears out relatively quickly. If you can change your own plugs, copper is the way to go.
