I got $3,000 for a 96 Golf GL (2.0L) with 282,000km from insurance with over $1,000 invested the day before it got totaled. There was no rust on the car!!! I've looked at MKIII's for a period for a replacement and prices for these cars are insane. The last Golf I've checked out had 150,000 with no options, a 99 model, with plenty of rust all around and he was stubborn at $5,700. He sold it to the dealer for much less when he replaced it for a Matrix.
