  • Coilover install..

So ill be getting my coilovers on the 6th and i was reading that some special tools are need. A Front Strut Spreader Tool and a Strut Nut Socket - 22mm. So my questions is do any of your guys have these tools already? I was thinking about just buying them from concept1, but idk now, if i could borrow them from someone with them, that would be great.

On the concept1 website..they have two tools VW / Audi Strut Nut Socket(For the inner front strut nut inside the strut mount) and a Strut Nut Socket - 22mm(For final top front strut nut) kinda confused on what one to get, prtty big price differnt too.

Anyhelp would be awesome as usual.

I had no idea that special tools were necessary at all.

      Re: Coilover install..

you dont need the strut spreader tool...
just pull with all your might... and if that doesnt work hammer a chisel in there and pull somemore...
as far as the top nut.. i used an impact on mine.. but be very careful not to over tighten it when doing that...
so if you dont have access to an impact you might need that tool...

        I have both tools from metalnerd.com (http://www.metalnerd.com/cat05.htm)

It says on the metalnerd site that you need to remove both 21 and 22 mm nuts to do the front struts. Haven't done this myself so I can't say.

PM me, we can work something out for borrowing them if you want.

          thanks a bunch.

I have the metalnerd tools and a spring compressor if you need to borrow them. I would give you a hand but I have projects going on in the garage so it is a mess.

                Re: Coilover install..

I installed my coilovers myself with 2 other buddies that had only done work on nissans.

You do not need a spring compressor if you are replacing the bushings and all.

I would advise you get this.

I didn't get that and it was a MAJOR pain in the ass but we improvised with some ancient tools from my dads tool box that seemed to do the job.

                Definitely get this!(spreader)

Here are some great DIY that REALLY help, so give them both a read over before and during install (the "Best DIY" is more detailed but they each have different techniques)

                2nd Best DIY

Here is how those guys improvised:

Definitely leave lots of time for install if you have never done it before. It becomes a lot easier after you've done it, but like some other things, its better to go slow the first time

                  Re: Coilover install..

You don't need that socket with the metal nerd tool, look it up and you will see what I mean. You do need a spring compressor otherwise you will have to drop the subframe to get the stock ones out and you will never get them apart safely.

                    2 words: impact gun.

add a 22mm socket and you are golden.

should take no longer than 25mins per corner.

                        Re: Coilover install..

I didn't need to use a compressor. They just dropped right out, then sold the suspension to someone on the vortex with the strut mounts, springs and struts still attached as one.

You'll need one if you plan on disassembling them into separate parts.

Best of luck on the install.
