  • Effing Fuses.

So I've blown fuse 14 about 4 times in the last 6 months, it's always one of two ways. Either the car was turned off and the key was still in the ignition for a few minutes then I went to close my sunroof/window and it was a no go. The other way was if you went to use an internal light (visor/dome) at the same time. I'm not sure why this is occurring since all the interior lights, windows, and sunroof work fine during normal circumstances. Now I do have 44DD LED's in all my interior lights though, if that'd make any difference. I just changed the fuse from a 10A to a 15A on it's most recent blow out.

    Any ideas or advice?

led lights should draw less current - not a problem there.

I don't know what size fuse is supposed to be in there, so no comment on the size.

Could check the track to make sure the sunroof operates smoothly, if it's getting extra resistance the motor will draw more current.

Check wiring inside the overhead console, there may be a slight intermittent short somewhere.

Okay, so the sunroof track is clear (other than a little white residue which looks similar to a salt stain, so I doubt that's anything of consequence). Up until now the fuses have all been 10A, as that was the original fuse that I replaced.

The overhead console I will have to wait to check.
      Thanks so far.

        inital advice

PUT THE RIGHT SIZE FUSE BACK IN NOW !!!!.

the fuse is there to protect the vehicle wiring not the devices, you are now making the wiring get extremely hot and its very possible it will get hot enough to cause a fire, I nearly lost my first car (ford escort) becuase i put a larger fuse in when a brake light fuse kept going, it was a dodgy bulb that was pulling more current than it was supposed to and one day the wire just went up while i had a car full of friends, luckily it was in the trunk and i managed to put it put!

secondly, try removing the bulbs and seeing if it still goes, in which case it will likely be the motor on its way out, typically jamming or the coils have burned up and are shorting out pulling higher current.

Okay fuse has been fixed, thank you!

As for the bulbs I'll try that tonight once I get home.

Which coils are you referring to?

Switch in the dome light? Which switch, as for missing though since they are all where they should be (or appear to be) I'd say I'm not missing a thing. I'll go and take a few pictures of the dome console if you'd like.

Still have yet to take the bulbs out and check since last night I ended up going to a pub with a couple friends, ha.

                Re: Effing Fuses.

Alright, so how about an update and more information.

I've narrowed down how it occurs and when, it's the visor lights that set it off and blow the fuse. This is how and when it will happen: After you open your door and the interior lights come on, they will dim and turn off once the car is started. Once the lights have dimmed, if you go to slide the visor open top reveal the mirror the fuse will blow. This will also happened in the exact same manner, but after you've turned the car off, but the key is still in the ignition.

                  Re: Effing Fuses.

so it sounds like it will do it whenever the visor lights are turned on? even when all other lights are off? all i can think of is maybe the element in the bulb has touched and welded itself together to make a higher current draw and blowing the fuses. replace the bulbs its a cheap place to start.

                    Re: Effing Fuses.

I've got another pair of LED's somewhere at home, I also remember I had to order in a new vanity light housing because the original one was cracked when I took it out. It seems to be something with the vanity light switches, not just flipping them down but turning on the vanity lights. Hmmm. I'll take the two bulbs in there out and replace them, plus I'll examine both housings after work tonight. For those I'll take pictures for you Eric.
