  • Noise from a lightened flywheel?

So I recently installed a Spec STG1 clutch and 16lb steel single mass flywheel in my car, as my stock unit was slipping pretty bad. Since the install the transmission is VERY noisy, particularly at idle in neutral. I've been told by spec that the noise I'm hearing is normal, due to getting rid of the dual mass flywheel, but to me the noise seems excessive. Does anyone have any experience running a single mass flywheel on a MK4? Is this noise normal or is something wrong? If this is a normal noise, this flywheel is coming out of the car ASAP! Please check out this short video I took of the car last night...

Is it just noisy or is there vibration? Describe the noise? Clicking, grinding, humming, rattling?

          Search on Vortex

Lots of people experienced constant noise and hated it.

          http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=3752606

          Eg.

"Have you ran a lightweight flywheel on yours? Maybe you don't mind it, but I couldn't stand hearing that noise at idle. "

"yeah funk the Single light FW's.... I hated it, would never do it again! It sounded like crap"

"The chatter caused by the lightweight flywheel when I had it was enough to drive me to replace it with a dual mass."

          http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=3779505

"My VF seems to be working fine. Yea it chatters loud at idle, but I personally love the way it feels"

"talk to Streetwerke about their experiences with LWFW. They've posted enough about the issues to count for something, and also the reasoning why they no longer offer them. Other than that, I heard Edwin's tranny chatter @ TOD and it was unnerving to say the least not knowing initially what the origin of the nose was. If it works for you then cool, but I don't want my car sounding like a diesel at idle. "

I bet its a normal noise. Next time, know what you are doing to your car before you do it?

Its normal. You should have done some more research, their are many unhappy people on vortex.

Thats why im gonna stay away from that $hit.

I really don't need the additude from you Pablo. You can stand up and talk when you actually start modding your car.

As far as the noise goes, if its normal, then I guess I'll just have to live with it. The clutch/flywheel combo performs very well, and I was expecting more noise, I guess its just a little more noise than what I thought.

                      I just turned over 92000km.

I'm slowly getting used to the noise the more I drive the car, maybe I'll throw my hood insulation back in and see how it sounds. I guess its not THAT bad, its just kind of annoying at idle.
