  • VR6 vs. 1.8T

    Hello, fellas!

I decided to upgrade from mk2 jetta to mk4 this spring...i don't know all that much about mk4s, so my question was what's essentially better between vr and 1.8T as far as maintnance cost and difficulty, as well as, modding opportunities and cost of that as well. Also which one is more reliable and any little tips and stuff i should know.....thanks a lot..

        your mk2 is hot.

Yea, this has long been debated and there's lot's of opinions out there. The biggest question is what you want from it. I think they are both pretty reliable.

If I had a choice (totally personal opinion) in a mk4 it would be a 24v VR6, but I wouldn't be looking to mod it as that is expensive.

vr6 for sound.. more expensive to mod

1.8t for easy to mod.. very torquey.

and the debate will rage on forever

that's what i'm looking for...more power for less money...the sound can bi fixed with som nice exhaust, cold air intake and maybe some nicer turbo setup?....that would be my next question: can you put a bigger/better tubo with intercooler kit and blow off valve and all that jazz??

personally i have owned both, and for someone who is going to keep modding to a minimum or wants to stick to cheaper mods, I prefer the 1.8T. in my opinion, when both are stock, the 1.8 is more fun to drive.

keep in mind its also better on gas.

                        Re: VR6 vs. 1.8T

ive only ever owned a 1.8T, but ive loved it.

A good turboback exhaust makes it sound wayyy meaner, and by getting either a REVO, APR or GIAC tune, it makes about 200hp with basically no modding.

All depending how much money you wanted to pour into it, but for a cheap and fun daily driver i would say 1.8

                          Re: VR6 vs. 1.8T

If you are going to turf the stock turbo, exhaust and IC pretty quick then you might as well go with a VR6. After replacing all that stuff your cost to mod would be about 10-15% higher than with a 1.8t and make a lot more power.

To do all that stuff to either car you will probably be looking at 6-10 grand.

However for a good all around car a 1.8t with a chip and a turboback is hands down better for a balance of power, cost and mileage and will probably cost you about the same as what the premium between a VR6 and 1.8t is.

                            i basically meant this;
                            unmodded - 1.8T is better
                            slightly modded/cheaply modded - 1.8T is better
                            expensive/big mods - VR6 is probably better

                              unmodded i would say a vr6.
                              a 24v valver anyway.

                              If your going to get a 12v vr6 in a mk4 don't even bother.
