  • Avic HU Questions - Let's put all the answers in One place!

I figured I'd put a list of questions about the Avic HU's that I've been researching...every question seems like another long, separate search for me, so I'll post all my inquiries here and hopefully they'll get answered.

    1. Is it a big job to get the steering wheel controls to work with it?
    2. Can the button colors be changed on the Avic Z2?
    3. Is there a surround 'trim' piece available with the same texture as the MKIV trim pieces?
    4. Does it receive calls placed to a Bluetooth-enabled cell phone?
    5. Does it cut out the music and allow the driver to take a phone call through the unit & car speakers?
    6. What is involved in bypassing the 'safety' features to get a DVD to play while driving?
    7. Does it integrate well with the Monsoon sound system and Monsoon stock amplifier?
    8. Can ANY picture be used as a wallpaper/background?
    9. Is the Sirius/XM tuner built in, or do you have to buy another separate unit (ie. what is meant by 'Sirius ready'?)?
    10. Can all functions be completed without using the touchscreen?
    11. Where is a good place to buy the PAC SWI-CAN, etc.?
    12. Is there any difference between the Avic Z2 and Z3 (besides firmware)?

    Thanks guys!!

You know, I don't even know why I attempt to post a new thread on here or even attempt to justify myself for doing so when I shouldn't have to. Why is there always someone that chimes in, saying "Go search it yourself"? I know by now to try to do things for myself and not use this forum much because I always find SOMEONE that has absolutely NO useful information whatsoever but wants to make the poster look like a lazy idiot rather than just keep quiet and move on.

Redmile, thank you for your answers...and the PAC SWI-CAN is the module needed to integrate the steering wheel controls with the Avic.

I hear what you are saying, but must admit that I was beat to the answer of www.avic411.com. That is a great forum site with a tonne of information on the entire AVIC lineup. Yeah, it takes more work to search a bit, but I think you'll get the best info there. On the flip side, I really like the idea of having all the AVIC related questions on one thread....Euro-specific!

To be honest you posted in the VW section about a after market head unit that not many people here have and you expected to get all your answers at once?
Personally I still need to get my Avic-N3 installed into the Van, just have to order up some more items for the install.

No problem. My answers aren't exact as I do not own an avic nor install them, I just used to sell them and talked to installers. We never used the PAC SWI-CAN but rather the PESWICAN from peripheral. As a salesman though I would never even suggest them as they never worked like they were supposed to. Maybe is PAC work better but I doubt it. Keep us updated on how the install goes, as I know there are a bunch of us on here who would love to put an avic in our cars.

                    1. Not Sure, someone has to be the guinea pig.
                    2. Yes, lot's of choices, you can even adjust the RGB to match it perfectly.
                    3. Yes, it's similar, not perfect.
                    4. Yes
                    5. Yes
                    6. Not Much, move a wire and ground another.
                    7. As well as any other deck.
                    8. It has to be a specific size saved on a specific dirorectory on a cd.
                    9. Buy the adapter, then It's ready to have the XM plugged into the back of the adapter that is daisy chained with the bluetooth, take the xm off your window and stuff it behind your dash somewhere.
                    10. Nope.

So I'd still have to buy a Sirius Sportster or something? That seems kind of redundant. Why wouldn't they just have an internal Sirius/XM tuner?

I was wrong, it's a all in one add-on box.

You shouldn't need to buy anything like a Sportster you just need to buy a satellite receiver like these

Why can't I find the dimensions of those things? I wonder if they're small enough to hide easily...? And by the way, the "search here, search there" comments are seriously getting old. If we all solely relied on that and didn't turn to our peers for consult, why is this damn site here in the first place?!?!?!

The XM adaptors were about 6'' by 6'' by 1'', but you needed two of them. The sirius ones look to be about the same size. You wont be able to 'hide' it behind the deck, but rather mount it under a seat or in your glove box.
