  • New wheels

I just got these in today. Shipped UPS so I was scared I was going to get pounded with brokerage. It actually wasn't too bad came to 100$ I thought much worse. Anyways I now need tires, are 225/40/18 a good idea here? These are 18x8 I expect tire bob can help me out, just wanted to get a feel for size of tires as I have never bought wheels this big before only some 16" for my old mk3. Suggestions are welcome P.S These are summer wheels only!

    Heres a picture:

Oh shite. Just realized they are 18x8 haha.. I thought I got 8.5 but that was a misprint on the box and I did infact order 18x8. Sorry for the confusion.

      Thanks for the reply!

        Re: New wheels

225/40/18's will be a nice fit.

If you want to get some for cheap you can get some General Exclaim tires from tirerack for like $90 / each for that size. Nothing fancy, but should do the trick!

        Great looking wheels!

Tangents are getting harder and harder to find brand new now that they are discontinued. I suggest getting yourself something with a light stretch and then space those puppy's right out to the edge of your fender.........THEN SLAM IT!

Ach Ja! Duby T are you a mind READER or what?
Exactly what I'm going to do. I applaud you for spotting the "replica". I was wondering if anyone would know the difference, sort of obvious to anyone who pays attention to wheels. LM's were just too expensive for me, a college student. Anyways, I bought these Miro 279's new from abbot automotive on the vortex. Pretty nice guy and gave me a deal too. How I can't wait to put these suckers on!

Chris: Do you know what the shipping is like from tire rack? I wouldn't want to save on tire prices and lose those savings on shipping costs

              Re: New wheels

I got an online shipping estimate from them (it's real simple - there are step by step instructions on their site) and it came out to $100 shipped to my postal code. They also give you an estimate on duty and taxes so your grand total includes shipping, brokerage, taxes and everything.

I priced out a set of those general exclaims and it was $550 total.

YOWZA! Those "225/40ZR18 General Exclaim UHP" are so cheap yet are on par if not rated better than the other tires that sell for $150-$200 ea.

Just quoted $512.88 from Tire rack for the Generals. According to the survey these ones beat out most of the more expensive tire.

Is there a mid priced "next step up" tire that I should consider? Some say generals have a soft sidewall and aren't too great around corners.

There are mixed reviews of the General Exclaim, however the lower rated reviews are from people who drive mid 2000 Fords (tires should be the least of their worries if you ask me).

I wouldn't believe Tire Rack as though they are some kind of independent testing facility. They SELL tires. They are encouraged to push certain tires, and they do that by showing off the merits of those tires by any means necessary.

I totally trust the review of someone who is coming from a Ford with a domestic brand tire like a Goodyear or BFG. Rather than someone who is going from one cheap tire (Kumho, General, etc) to another, or someone who is trying to justify their purchase.

Personally, I think that you get what you pay for.

                            Re: New wheels

I just bought ebay VW center caps that will fit. I'm not sure if me buying tires will do anything at all to sway the economy, but I do like to support local companies as much as possible, I'll see what tirebob has to offer.

I'm getting some centering rings shipped to me from Miro as they were not included.

Also, what about these wheel locks? There are a few different size lugs as well as different types(cone, ball, tuner). Is the best bet to measure myself or is there an MK4 standard for aftermarket wheels?
