Re: Best place to get a GT28RS or T3/T4 turbo (AEB Swap)

"He" (herein referred to as "me" or "I" ) is just looking to get the car on the road first. That'll put me ahead of about 70% of the others who start on a project like this, but never get the chance to see it to fruition.

I'll start with the k03 setup, but once the "upgrades" go into place, injectors, turbo, and programming are all part of the plan.

BTW, thanks for all the feedback guys. Muchly appreciated, even the criticism.

Not so much criticism as much as making sure you knew what you are getting into.. talked with so many people that figured they could throw on a bigger turbo and be done with it... Sounds like you have quite the project on 'your' hands!!

Yeah. I knew it would be a trio of upgrades. I just wanted to make sure that the upgrades fit my application, which is for quick spoolups and an all-around peppy, fun driving car.

TurboMeyers gave me the advice of using a k04-20, which should be good to about 250 hp, which is fine with me, and the price point, along some programming and possibly injectors isn't overly costly. I'm going to go with that when it comes time for the upgrade. Good thing is I can reuse the manifold I'll be making. I must admit the k03 exhaust manifold looks damn restrictive with that 3-way collection/restrictor going on.

            Isn't the K04

            #1, it's puny.
#2, it's oil and water cooled

            Just like your K03?

if you dont want to water cool it it wont be the end of the world . just run an oil cooler to compensate and do a turbo timer , but evrything is there ona aeb to run both on a k04 , and the ko4 20 is big enuf for the 250 hp he is wanting

If he wants to upgrade later, he'll need to cut the flange off his manifold and remake it...

If you go with a T3 flanged manifold and turbo, then you can just bolt on something bigger later.

Good job zinging me on my previous comments....

I originally didn't want a water cooled one, but the was told most of the turbos available were of the "oil/water-cooled" variety anyway, so here's me eating crow on that statement.

I specifically said I wanted something that spooled quickly and made for a fun ride. I've been in a few BT setups that were damn impressive and would probably kill my proposed setup in both a drag and the HP department, but it's just not what I'm looking for.

I took Turbomeyers advice to go with the k04-20. I'll just invest in more bandaids for my bleeding arms .

As for the puny comment, I don't think I ever indicated I wanted to resolve that scenario with a "huge" turbo, just with something that pushes a reasonable amount more air than the K03

Going from 150 HP to 250 makes me pretty happy, considering my cousin's 180 HP VR6 GTI (same vintage) breaks loose whenever I want it to (and some times when I don't....like in corners).

If I want to go bigger at a later point, cutting/welding another flange onto my manifold is the least of my worries, so $30 plus 15 minutes on the TIG is a minor concern.
