  • Best place to get a GT28RS or T3/T4 turbo (AEB Swap)

    Hi all,

Well, I think I've pretty much exhausted the options available to me with the K03 that the AEB came with. #1, it's puny. #2, it's oil and water cooled, which just ain't cool with me (OK, with the skin attached to my forearms when I have to work on that crap).

I've got a conversation going on the Tex, but I wanted to get a Canadian perspective on which of these turbos would be best (and cheapest).

The swap is a 96 GTI (formerly VR6) and I'm going to be running stock AEB (Passat) management on the car (maybe chipped and bigger injectors), so I don't want to go wild.....until I've driven the car for a while and had my way with it.

Let a fellow dubber out! I'd love to know who distributes them in Canada, or if you don't get killed with brokerage from the US (doubtful).

    Thanks.

You can't just throw a new turbo on.... you'll need a heck of a lot more then that. Im guessing something like ATP Eliminators are a good start..
Also.. a tur GT28rs is Oil and coolant cooled as well... what is the problem with that?

      He has put a 1.8T into a MK3 Golf...
Im sure he knows that you can't just throw a GT28 onto a 1.8T and call it a day.

Yeah. I'm aware it's not a bolt-on affair. I should have put in that the management is a 98 Passat, so as far as I know, I have no IMMO issues to deal with.

have you checked out Kinetic Motorsport, BC based company, I believe they have some stuff for the AEB, but that my only be the K04 turbos. Not sure if there are BT kits for the AEB so you might have to make a custom manifold.

PAG was really good when I worked with them: www.pagparts.com
ATP is another good way to go I guess.

For running more stock management, I would go with a 28R and yeah something like an eliminator or someone's K04 kit... or you could try and find a Super 60 manifold and turbo and then try and just tweak your fueling a bit.

I was going to be fabbing up a k03 manifold anyways, so making one for another turbo won't be an issue.

if you need turbo stuff let me know, i know people and can usually get stuff below what you will pay both south of the border and in Canada.

Awesome man. I'll definitely take you up on that....especially since this won't be the last turbo project of mine.

One idea that I always wanted to see done is use a TDO4H-19T from a Volvo S70/V70R on a 1.8T. Should be really good choice and nobody else would have one You'd have to make your own manifold but if you want to do something unique, theres an idea for ya. It would be cheaper than a lot of turbos and you would get better results. It will out flow a GT28R and maybe RS with faster spool and like I said, cheaper, and OEM built to last for the Volvos.

Forget the 1.8T, how about that TDI in the MK2? Is it done?

One word for that project......Parts, parts, parts....

Waiting to get my turbo back and the materials to build my downpipe. Then I need to build my own manifold, which I've got in the works (goofy frickin Italian LT2 VNT20!!!!!).

Then he should also know said car will run like crap on a stock Passat ECU with bigger injectors and a bigger turbo?
Unless going with full on custom... you will need some kind of programming to make your car run well....

You can run a small turbo like a GT28R on stock software, if you are running lean you can increase your fuel pressure a bit, it will richen you throughout the rev band, you just will be a little too rich down low before the turbo spools.

Never be as good though I agree.
