Re: Sound system opinions and help.

Type S is their mid-grade. I think E is the lowest, then S, then R, then X (top of the line).

Are they component or 2 way? If they are 2 way the tweeter up top would not be hooked up. A 2 way speaker has the tweeter mounted in the centre of the mid-driver. Components are speparate. There should also be a crossover in there somewhere, which may not be tuned properly so it removes the bass

Also the amp may not be setup properly, cutting off the low frequencies, also removing the bass.

Thanks for the help, so where is a good place to start to get my problems worked out?

If you're buying a different deck, Visions etc are fine - remember it's the installer, not the store so keep that in mind when someone says they had a bad experience somewhere. AudioConcepts is probably the best average but they're pricier than Visions/A&B/Soundsaround.

          Some checks for the speakers:

disconnect outputs of amp, and use a 9v battery
+ to + and - to - of all the speakers Test from wires that were connected to the amp, make sure all the speaker move the same way (move out or in from resting position)
this will make sure the speakers aren't wired backwards. If they are wired backwards you will lose bass - speakers of of phase.
If the speakers aren't sealed to the door properly you will lose bass also.

like others said keep external amp, the deck won't get so hot and distort as with internal amps at high volumes.
          put.......put.......

          .... ... .. .

All depends if he used the proper spacers on the speakers too. VW doors are nice in that they are a totally sealed enclosure for the speakers which helps with bass response. My bet is the deck or amp is crossed over too high. The deck just needs the sleeve installed better to more solid mounts made for the deck, it is a common problem in the mk4 double din dash.
