hey guys.... its time to get me a CAI

ive been looking around and cant make up my mind

soooo i thought i get some feedback from you guys... what brand.. from where bla bla bla.... let me know..... basically best bang for it buck.. and which brand would be best for CAI for a 03 1.8T........
    cheers!!

n oh ya while im at it.. someone also shed some light on why BOV are not good for 1.8t's.. i read in many threads that BOVs dont work good with the 1.8T engines... and that you should rather go with a DV..... quick question.. which one is better and do the DVs still make that "pssstttt" sound???

    cheers!!!

Not to be offensive but there is a search button at the top of the page for a reason. Plus reading your posts over and over is starting to hurt my grammar

      Re: Cai

A cold air intake does little to nothing for the 1.8t. All they are good for is making noise (ie the psssht noise you referred to).

Unless your car has been flashed with aftermarket software, upgrading your DV is not entirely necessary.

        Re: Cai

BOV vs DV's on VW explained:

When air enters your stock vehicle on a VW it passes through a Mass Air Flow Sensor (MAF) which measures the air before it enters the system. Once it enters this system we shall assume that the system is closed until it exits the exhaust. Your ECU does calculations depending on the amount of air in the system, and adjusts the fueling accordingly.
What a DV does is divert the air back into the system, while the BOV releases it to the atmosphere.
What you end up with when you run a BOV is measured air from the MAF is now leaving that once closed system. There is no way for the ECU to know this or know how much has left the system, and so it continues to put fuel into the system thinking there is the same amount of air as before. Because there is less air, it will cause you to run rich. Running rich will affect your performance in a negative way and kill your fuel mileage.

I hope that kind of explains it for you in a rough sense. It's in no way detailed.

Now if you run an aftermarket enginemanagement system and you get rid of your MAF sensor, you can run a BOV, but otherwise you are just doing yourself a disservice really running a BOV on a VW. Your car will run...it will just run rich. And in TripleG's case will cause your exhaust pipe to catch on fire at the top of a mountain pass cause you have been running rich at WOT for 5 minutes straight and there is too much unburnt fuel in the pipe.

          Re: Cai

As someone said above, if you buy a CAI and a DV you'll get a psst noise and some bling under the hood, and thats about it. Don't buy a BoV, your car will run like crap.

To even further summarize, step away from the car. Save your money for suspension, chip, exhaust in that order.

Actually I would recommend getting a floblade. I got mine, joey-modded it and I got like an extra 9 hp at the wheels.

If you just want the sound, and want to be cheap..
Just go buy a cone filter and stick it on the maf.
Then you could just get one of those little breather valve filters, to put on that black tube that is connected to the airbox.

What he is talking about is a Short Ram, and it is cheaper than a CAI. It's what I have on mine. I like it because it saves me from worrying about any puddles. My Short Ram cost me $119 with a heat shield and breather filter from www.esetuning.com but there are plenty of Short Ram intakes if you browse any vw online store.

I was a little disappointed in it as the site advertised 20hp but for the price what can you expect...

I actually gave it a shot with little success. I joey'd it to but the thing made no noticeable difference. Piece of junk IMO.
