ya never know, at around 85k km my car had an odd feel to it, and it turns out the timing belt teeth were quite damaged... to the point where the timing was slightly off at times. Not common, but it can be an urgent thing.

My waterpump was leaking at 100, can't be too careful. He'd kick himself silly if he waited 1 or 2 weeks and it blew, and for what? It's got to be done.
If he had his car inspected and it was taken care of I doubt it was just teetering on the edge of a disaster. You guys make it sound like thats it, its going to go any second better get it towed to the shop.
thats a cheap service compared to motor replacement. $700 and up i guess is the going rate.
calgary is considered to be severe weather climate so whatever recommended intervals are in place, shorten then for severe conditions.
if a doctor says you need heart surgery and you decline cause it's expensive, what is your next option when your heart fails?
I was nt declining it so much for that it was expensive but I know that I can get it done for less than the dealership. I was quoted about $1100 at the dealership but wanted to see what it would cost elsewhere.
What does this job run? I declined the water pump, timing belt service when my car was in the dealer the other day.
I am ay 99,XXX km so I think I am due shortly.

I got it done for 750 I think at tunedub. Might have been 700, I forget. I was at 104K.
I've read a lot about this so I'll say again - the belt is supposed to be good for ~140K kms, look at other vehicles with rubber belts, it's not that vw rubber is inferior. The VW problem is the water pump. It runs the hydrolic timing belt tensioner. If that goes, timing belt usually goes. And since they are all in the same place on the motor, you do them all together. There are mods to switch to mechanical tensioners from previous gen vws, but there's big cons in places with big temp changes. So I didn't do that.
Also, there's aftermarket waterpumps with a metal impeller which I was planning on using. George convinced me to stick with OEM stock and just change them every 100K. I forget the exact reason but he said he was having more trouble with them than the plastic (I think they leak more).
