  • another cold TDI thread

Who's TDI started without any trouble this morning (hot garages exempt). i have an issue with mine, and i can't pin it down. This morning I got about 3-4 revolutions out of the engine before the battery was dead. Car is charging +-14.4volts with all accessories and lights on, so that system is ok. Terminals are clean. Battery should be good, I took it in to have it tested in the fall with one of those large stationary test units that charges the battery and load tests and stuff. Has a functioning oil pan heater that was plugged in. I expect it to have trouble in -30, but I also thought it would turn over a few more times.

In the end I started my mk3 (which fired on about the second turn - not plugged in), then boosted the TDI. It started in a couple tries.

My next step is to pull my amp fuse to see if that system is drawing power.

Another question: i have a 1f capacitor along with my amp. would this have any influence on anything? It can draw a lot of power, but i'm thinking it should be sitting idle once it has a charge.

Anyways, i'll pull the fuse to the amp/cap, and see if I get a better result

If it started with a boost, then it is your battery, or you have a drain on the system.

A battery blanket would be a cheap, quick solution.

i'm going to try and check for a drain tonight. see if my cheapy multi-meter still works (else brent, you might get a call ). If there is no drain, i'll pick up a new battery. I hear those battery blankets work wonders too.

Is there a chance that a cap might actually help, it's like a battery but with unlimited cranking amps, limited by the amp fuse.

I tried filling up at the Flying-J down south at about 6 this morning, I tried 5 pumps and they were all and frozen, I gave up and went to road king.

i'm looking for batteries, and it seems that no many have the same rating as the OEM one. A little higher CCA, but not as high amp hours, which is really what helps in a TDI. Makes sense when you look at them i guess. The spec napa one that i have now is quite a bit smaller then the OEM one.

about 70 amp hour on oem, 44 on red top. I did look though.

checked draw just now. 32mA, with and without stereo hooked up. I think the battery is not-so good.

Those caps don't do much for your stereo let alone help the car. The wifes car didn't start this morning either and it was plugged in. Mine did start but it was in the garage and plugged in. More then likely it is due to a weak battery. Batteries lose a huge amount of storage capacity in the cold and so as soon as the glow plugs hit it runs away like a little girl. I think the battery I have in my car is somewhere along the 80-100CCA so that maybe why mine was ok. Try the Canadian energy batteries I have always used them and never had a problem with them.

                    Re: another cold TDI thread

my tdi would have started if i was there i never plug it in, and it has never not started on me (except when i blew the engine up) lol

you'd be surprised about batteries, one day they work, the next they don't. it's an overnight type of thing. i would say go buy a new battery. remember tdi batteries pack more oooomph than gas batteries, so get the right sized one.

ps: my car has been parked for 6 months straight, i never unplug the battery, i have an amp and cap. it was started a couple of weeks ago to be driven out of the garage and back. it took a few turns i hear, but it did start.

                      Re: another cold TDI thread

Mine started with NO issues today. I did plug my oil pan heater in as well as my inline coolant heater.

                      First try.

Good luck on the battery search. Let me know what you bought. I will soon be looking for one as well.

Where do you find the battery warmer blankets?

i think i might go with the OEM Varta battery. its supposed to be good, its got a better power rating then Napa or Partsources stuff, and I can get it on my way home today with not to much hassle. and its huge.. good winter weight .

I had mine plugged in - coolant heater only. Timer is set up to turn on the heater at 5am, I left about 6:30. took two tries to fire up, the second time I had it cranking for a good 20 seconds, could hear the motor was ready to go but the fuel not so much. I have a little bottle of diesel I keep inside the car to see how the fuel is doing, and it was totally gelled. only gonna get worse this week!!!
