so there has been talk of this being done and as to whether or not the alternator has to be removed. some say yes, some say no. i say yes with pics (and imagination).
i used these tools.

remove the upper engine covers.
remove the 5mm allen screws, circled, and 10mm nuts for the secondary air hose, arrows.

flop the whole assembly over to the side. there will be a connector to undo, circled, and a 10mm nut that is for the secondary coolant pump hose. arrows point to the clamp and stud.

coolant pump, mounted to fan shroud, 2x10mm nuts.

disconnect the lower rad hose from the thermostat housing, arrow. lay it to the side. i removed the housing bolts at this point, and remove the housing.

old stat. i used the pic to remove it.

new stat.

set the housing in place.

for the bolts, i stuffed some grease into the 10mm socket to hold it in place so i can start the threads.

i used a magnet to set the lower bolt.
tighten the bolts down evenly. i used the stubby ratchet with an extension and a long reach wobble 5mm socket, the same one used to remove it.

reinstall everything back in the reverse order you removed it. fill the coolant reservoir and bring it up to temp.
this took me about 40 minutes, excluding smoking a fatty while it warmed up.
clearly you need the right tools to do this, and even though i have pics, they suck, and it is kinda tricky. drain coolant in to a bucket. not the drain. disconnect the battery. sparks may fly.
i had tried to hook up with another member to do this a while ago but couldn't find the right time. sorry. i did this in my garage for my friends GF last week. i'm sure he got paid better than i did.
