  • Turbo upgrades...

If i were to upgrade the turbo in my car to something like the APR stage 3, is there anything else that i would have to do to it?

i heard that you had to put new O rings and stuff in it to handle the pressure, is that just in that honda crap or do i have to do that too?

o-rings?.... in like the a/c lines ....? jk
the stage 3 is ok with most healthy engines but a 3+ is recommended to go forged rods . pistons are ok but you midas well replace them when your in there . but the stage three is pretty major . are you sure thats the path you want to take .?

You'll want a new clutch to handle the power, an exhaust system, and a better intercooler.

I have got a turbo back exhaust already but i don't know what i want to do next ... i was looking at what i could do with the turbo and intake but i don't know which is the best way to go with something like that...

i don't exactly want to go overboard, i am still only 16...

          Couple thoughts.

          1) Don't be in a rush to add lots of power. Learn to handle what you have.

          2) There's already a lot of great info on this site that cover these kinds of questions. You can search on all kinds of items.

          3) Have a peek at vwvortex.com...there's some great info (and some not so great info) on the forums there. I'd suggest doing your research on Vortex and then bringing your thoughts back to Eurodrivers to get some clarification / better information. I think they folks on here are more...helpful than you'll find on the 'tex.

            Re: Turbo upgrades...

I would start with basic bolt on mods, like intercooler upgrade, turbo inlet pipe, chip etc. There is a lot involved even with a full turbo ugrade kit like the apr stage 3. As jeff said do your research on vortex, and you will realize how much work is involved.

Thanks, that makes sense... I was actually looking at going to that driving course at race city where they teach you to handle your car better at descent speeds.... i just found out about it today

I heard from someone at school that he had to replace gaskets and cylinder heads and all that when he put a turbo upgrade in and it didnt sound right to me.

the rods should be forged from factory.
1.8t should be able to handle 350hp(bottom end)according to my VW instructor back in 98.

it's that ridiculous oil sump that kills your engine and turbo.
thats why they went to a bigger oil filter and synthetic oil.

Yep. If you're having a shop install it, be prepared to pay big bucks, like $10000+. Dont forget everything else you will need/want, like lsd, suspension, clutch, etc.

                      Re: Turbo upgrades...

this is the most open ended question regarding turbo stuff. Do yourself a favor, get on vwvortex.com and spend a few weeks READING and SEARCHING about your car and turbo upgrades. There are some extremely knowledgeable people on there, and all of this has been covered. You can't ask questions when you dont know the right questions to ask, and going on there and spending some quality time reading will give you a TON of information.

I also highly recommend going to the library or indigo and picking up a copy of "Maximum Boost" by Corky Bell. This is the bible of turbo stuff and will answer any question you may have about developing a setup.

Research and the internet are your friend. That way you can start asking more intelligent questions. It's not to cut you down, but upgrading to large turbo setups aren't as simple as just buying the turbo kit and bolting it on. There is a list of things a mile long for each engine that go with it for things you should be taking care of along the way.

sorry dude broken rod pile at my shop says 300 is as far as you want to push the non forged 180hp internals (rods the pistons are good for way more). the bigger oil filter has the same pleets as the small one . and i have seen cars running the synthetic since new that still sludge up the pumps . its not the sumps fault ... its the castrol syntec oil that audi vw use . it evaporates to sludge if left to the maximum oil change intervals
