  • Did VW change the oil spec for TDIs?

I stopped in at Northland to get some oil and a filter for my 2004 TDI. Parts guys hands me Castrol 5w30 instead of the normal 5w40 I have been getting (and specd in the manual). I question him about it and he tells me that VW changed their recommended oil to this new 5w30 about a year ago. No reason give. I had not heard of this before so I decided to do a little research before purchasing the oil. Anybody else hear of this? He also told me that the 5w40 has been discontinued.

I would say he is full of BS as far as I have heard.

Where can I buy some 5w40 oil that meets the 505.01 spec in Calgary?

The spec hasn't changed, just the oil itself. Check out TDIclub.com, I was curious last time I bought oil as well but it all seems legit.

I started reading some of the oil threads on TDIclub.....an hour later I had several dozen different options. Those guys are very opinionated.

I was told that the 5w40 is hard to get and not nessicary for the tdi. The 5w30 meets all the requirments.

I buy my oil from an ESSO Supply store here in Lethbridge. Its Mobil Delvac 5W40. The last case I bought he told me I wasnt to be using that oil for my car. He claimed according to the Mobil rep that VW hadnt approved the oil for use in their cars. He also brought out some literature on it for me to read. I told him it was my forth case and I have had no problems. So he sold me the case anyway. Funny all the opinions out there. If there was an issue with the oil I use.... I am surprised I havent had problems with the car in the 150kms I have put on it using this oil. Even when I first started to buy the cases this is the stuff that was recommended by the ESSO supply store after they made some phone calls.
ANYWAY.....I have had no problems using it. I think there are lots of people out there that are using SYN 5W40. When I used to get my oil changed at VW they never had a problem putting it in my car! In fact if you paid a little extra they took SYN 5W40 from a 50 gal drum in the back for the TDIs. Think it was $10 extra for them to use it.

More then likely Delvac is even better for your TDI. I use to use it until the price went way up. I now use Chevron Delo, although it is not 505.0 rated is is close enough for me.
