new to the board.. thought i'd make an intro post. im a mad newb and dno anything about the mechanical side of things, but i kno a fair amount about japanese cars - time to learn about the euro side. i kno enough about most cars up until 3 years ago when i stopped buying car magazines because i wouldnt stop spending money on my car and it started to become a problem - that ends now. lol... back to spending money on cars, that's right.

so yah. first things first: what's the best and cheapest suspension set up for my car?
    cheers,

Welcome to the boards!! First things first, your car catalina blue not indigo blue. Second, when talking about suspension, stay away from cheap. Although you don't have to spend thousands of dollars for coilovers, a good cupkit will suit your needs quite well. I guess it depends if you want or need the flexibility of being able to adjust the height when you need. I have run both and have been pleased with the ride and drop of a cupkit. I've run a 60/40 H&R and FK kit and was happy with both!

      Cheers

        Looks like a 2.0. I have a new found respect for 2.0's.

Welcome, and if you're looking for an inexpensive way to lower the car than a spring and shock combo from several companies is a good way to go. It's going to depend how low you want to go though.

Welcome to the boards, suspension is like the others have said, could look for something used too. I agree with Derek, you car is not Indigo Blue and it could be Porcelain Blue too hard to tell exactly from the picture.

Edit don't think Porcelain was offered in 1996 so Catalina it is!

            Re: sup everyone

If you go too cheap on the suspension you will end up with problems on a VW. As everyone has said, it is pretty critical to match the shocks to the springs and so most reputable companies sell a "cup kit". But if you want to go really low you will need coilovers. FK is a good place to start for something inexpensive. You could also look at the used market and get some lightly used gear.

                  welcome,
General rule of thumb is dont cheap out on mods. If you can't afford to do it right dont bother until you do. It's just going to cost you more down the road to fix your mistake and it starts to become a real pain in the ass.

There is a lot of knowledge in many of these VW forums, particularly the vortex tech forums. Take people's opinions with a grain of salt in the local lounges and discussion forums, everyone has an opinion on everything.

There are a couple of big large Western Canadian forums, this one, CVD and Dubberz out on the coast. If you are looking for used parts check out CVD and especially Dubberz.com as they have a much larger following in BC and therefore more used parts available.

Don't be afraid to ask. Also if you dont want to not get flamed for stuff try and type properly and dont use text message spelling. It just pisses everyone off and no one can understand you.

Wow strong recommendation... Care to back up your reasoning?

I cheaped out on coilovers with my GTI, but they turned out to work awesome. They were Patec Holeshots, and ended up being about $850 shipped after GST and whatnot coming across the border. That's probably as cheap as you want to go on coils.

Welcome to the boards and a Cup Kit will do just fine IMO.

                          hey,

thanks for the immediate and hefty responses everyone, mucho appreciado. anyhow, i've been thinking either the cupkit, or a tokico matched spring and shock package that i can get from Lordco here in BC into my hands for just about 650-670ish. i know tokico is great for the japanese cars but have yet to find someone with something to say bout em for a GTI or ANY european car for that matter.

i saw these online just now, any thoughts?

The link I posted above has reviews of both the Tokico AND Supersport products.

I think you can probably find an FK kit for less than the price you quoted, somewhere like Concept 1 or AMI in BC
