it dosent need to be crashed as it is the same car as golf , however the bumpers need to be changed to a car that does meet . the 5mph crash . thats all vw had to tell transport canada .....just tell them thats it .just a fax or email is all they need to send stating the r32 would meet canadian standard if the rebar and skins were swaped out to a standard gtis

        Another lawsuit about importation....

Two leasing companies in Canada have hit the warpath to uncover a conspiracy between the Canadian Government and automakers to keep vehicles high within the country.

Fournier Leasing Co. Ltd. and Canadian Auto Associates Ltd. have sued Transport Canada, Canada Border Services Agency, BMW Canada, Mercedes-Benz Canada, and Mercedes-Benz USA in a lawsuit that alleges the strict requirements for people or companies to import cars into Canada enabled a 20 percent to 30 percent spike in cars sold in Canada versus similar U.S. models. The two companies are seeking damages that total in excess of $1 billion.

A statement filed with the Ontario Superior Court said, “These additional charges, fees procedures and restrictions prevent more competitively priced Mercedes vehicles from entering into the Canadian market, thereby enabling the Mercedes defendants to charge higher prices for new vehicles sold and leased by them in Canada.”

None of the automakers involved have commented on the legal actions.

I was at Glenmore Audi as I have bitten by the 'new toy' bug and was curious what the 'come on in and we'll discuss our US competitive pricing' spiel.

Pfft. Lame. An a4 2.0t is still well over the 50 thou mark (with goodies, of course) and the same car priced in the US is $38k.

Has anyone compared the price of a Canadian GTI and a US GTI? The retail prices seem to be within about 10% of each other.

Re: transport canada to call manuf. bluff

I am bringing up a4s regularly and i get them up here (2006 and newer quattros ) and selling them for arround 30k with 40,000 kms or less on them i i recode the odometers for kms and drls all through the vag com so its so close to fully canadian , it is hard for audi to compete with that for price , i have one of them for sale right now . and if anyone wants one just let me know i can find them from the audi wholesale auctions in the us ,(i have a connection down there)

From an Audi dealer in Spokane:

"I'm sorry but it is a directive of Audi USA that we do not sell cars to Canadians."

                Free market economy my ass.

Keep us informed. I'm a couple months away from being ready to pull the trigger on a new car and so far your route seems the best.

It looks like as of yesterday they haven't taken the R32 off the list. Even the 2008 claim that the bumpers can not be modified to comply with Canadian standards. Pfft. I got all excited when I saw they had updated the list yesterday :(
