  • transport canada to call manuf. bluff

so i was watching the news the othernight and transport canada will be looking into new claims the car makers have given riv canada that many new modles cannot be changed over to canadian specs so are not allowed to be imported (2004 r32, any 2008 vw ) transport canada up until this point had just been taking thier word as to what cars could be allowed with or without modification and what modles were un admisable . there has been a huge rash of suposed un admissable cars and riv smells a rat . this is a good news thing for us , even if you dont plan on buying a us car the prices of canadian cars will even out sooner than later . this means $26k brand new gtis .....yes
and a3s at sub 30k base

I think it is about time they work on this as there is no way most of these cars should be denied importation, and with the way things are going companies are looking for anyway possible to stop the flood of Canadians buying US cars. The whole thing of having to contact Mercedes to find out if your car can come up is rubbish, they should have no say in the matter and how can you trust what they say anyway!

What I have found disgusting lately is how on the radio and in print ads, the Canadian dealerships are really milking the fact that they are "adjusting" their prices, like its some kind of big sale. They say "us competitive pricing! Come in and save thousands" but really its not that competitive still, and if they are going to have a sale, it should be on TOP of the pricing adjustments!

Case in point see my post in this thread

          http://www.eurodrivers.ca/forums/showthread.php?t=12926

I would literally laugh in a salesperson's face if they offered me a new car at MSRP -$1500

I realize its not their fault but still, that is just an insult so there's no other way to take it?

There was an interesting article about this earlier - I forget where so disregard if it was here.

Basically the problem is that there are so many leases out, by dropping the value/sale price of new cars you're screwing up the residual of every vehicle currently out there.

Also happens to be that there are the highest number of lease returns scheduled this year than the last 6 years or so.

So a BMW dealer with 1500 04 325is on lease were calculated with residual values of 29K on return. If they lower the price on new BMWs to 30K then all those leases are now only worth 24 or less. Owners won't take that bath, dealers will be completely screwed - far worse than the few people who keep bitching and actually bother doing the import.

So there is still hope for an R32 in Canada. Did anyone hear of when the investigation will release their findings and the rules relaxed?

no they wouldn't actually. and its been discussed over and over again.
yes there are a few enthusiasts that would buy them, but there are more 20 year olds with dreams saying they want one than people actually willing to put down $30-40K on a "golf".
This topic has been covered time and time again on the larger Canadian VW boards, sadly there just isnt the market for these cars. The same goes for cars like the Mitsubishi EVO and others.

YES die hard tuners and enthusiasts will buy a small number of these cars, but car manufacturers really dont care about us unfortunately

Re: transport canada to call manuf. bluff

I think the sales tactics by the dealers are funny. I am not stupid. I feel bad for those who are. We as Canadians are to trusting. Face it we have been screwed for years and we will continue until the government is pressured to step in. On the way home last week from work I heard a radio advertisement. "Come to Pincher Creek Ford where we have adjusted our already competative pricing to compete against US pricing. We have lowered our pricing of the remaining stock of 2007 vehicles. Ford F450 fully loaded $9000 off. Ford F250 Lariet $10000 off". Now what the majority of consumers dont realise is.....Its a 2007. Ford has lowered the price to move all 2007 off the lots so dealers can buy the 2008 for stock. The price cut was by Ford not by the dealer. It wasnt to match the US price. It was because its old stock! I think dealers should be held responsible for the misleading ads they post. I took the info for this truck and sent it to Vegas. Same truck down there is still over $10,000 cheaper. So many of the people who are trusting would run to the dealer and not do their homework. 15 mins and a $3 phone call could save you $10,000. Now I have just bought a Nissan Frontier in Vegas-$18,000. Same truck up here over $30,000 used. Called Nissan in Vegas. They will pick me up at the airport, hotel me for the night if I buy from them. $150 flight down. Sure I have to spend time driving it back, pay for gas, etc. Lets say at the most $1000 for extras. OR they even will truck it to me. $500 flat rate to boarder or Great Falls.

There is a farmer on my way to work in Ft MacLeod that uses his own tractor with a 2 level car deck to haul up from the states. He goes down and buys a truck load at a time. Spends $100-$150K per trip. Makes $25-45k for 2-3 days work. He resells all he buys with a minimum $5k profit per vehicle. Most goto dealers looking for a deal.

Oh one more thing......... Regarding the STI's...

I have 2 buddies that own them since new. And BOTH of them said that if the R32 was available in CANADA they would have bought that instead... Infact the one was living in Califorina at the time he purchased it adn actually had a R32 on order. He went into the dealership to order the roof racks and got talking to the salesman about not waiting until he got the car back to canada. The salesman said "where?" Ken then told him and teh salseman said we'er going to have to cancel your order. Ken didnt know about the importation law. He was seriously pissded. Thats when the VW salesman suggested the STI it was Kens second choice but now it was FORCED onto him as his first...... The VW guy set the whole thing up for him. Great service but he was STUCK with a STI......
