  • Surging!!!!

I know there are probably a million threads about this in vortex but I'd rather not sift through them. MY 04.5 GLI has some stumbling issues which I believe is know as surging. Sorry as I'm a bit of a 1.8T noob!! The car will sometimes stumble or surge under light acceleration. It seems more prominent when the car is cold but will also do it when fully warmed up. The car is APR chipped (I keep it in the 91 octane mode), has a N75J Valve and a Forge 007 DV. Any 1.8T junkies able to diagnose my problem? Its not that big of a deal other than I'd like for it to be proper.

    Thanks in advance!

I had the same issues and was just a matter of trying out different N75 valves until I came across one that fixed it. Not sure if it's an exact science, though...

Really Derek? Did this just start? I would check the N75 to start with...I don't really think they "go bad" but maybe there is something wrong with it? I never really noticed any surging...

Yeah ive noticed this too... Not when im flooring it, just a lite acceleration. Always in the 2500rpm to 2800rpm range.. Car seems like it loses all power and falls on its face. But ive had a CEL for aaaaages now. lol

I think this is caused by the lowering of your car, JK big guy those are only answers i get.

As mentioned before, try different N75 valves. Are you running green-top coolant sensors? If not, switch over to the green-tops. I hear that has also helped people with surging. Why? I dunno.

                      Re: Surging!!!!

I think honestly the root cause of this is in the programming (reflash/chip). There is not much you can do though. Its possible that the programming just does not allow tight enough control over the valve, or that the valve does not have the capabilities to smoothly control the wastegate.

I would say that your best options are:

                      - You can try another N75 valve as suggested - they seem to have different characteristics

                      - You can try adjusting the wastegate arm pre-load a little bit

                      - You can use a laptop and lemmiwinks to adjust the boost programming until this goes away

I think part of the solution is just living with it. You can't expect to get something for nothing. The idea of the chip is to give you quite a lot more power with stock hardware and so I think the daily driving characteristics are bound to suffer a tiny bit.

I was just reading up on those n75 valves. Is it a good idea to replace it any way? Or only when having surging problems? People have said it smoothins the boost curve and could add more power?
