Hi all,
so everything was hunky dory until yesterday. The car is a 2000 golf, AEG 2.0 engine.
On Sunday I noticed that the car was idling really *REALLY* rough, almost like someone was pulsing the gas and then letting off. I also noticed a mild odour when I got out of the car. I also noticed that my AF gauge was staying 1-2 bars into stoich and going into lean quite a bit. "normal" operation would have the led cycling between 1-2 bars into stoich and max rich.
Today, the rough idling was worse and it became noticeable when i rev the engine to 2000 RPM.. the whole car vibrated. soon after I popped a CEL. the rough idle diminished, but it's still there. AF seems to stick around 1 bar stoich with forrays into lean and the odd occaision to max rich. I also noticed that there is a bunch of black crap on the driveway just outside the garage and on my back bumper, like it was ejected from the exhaust. When I got home tonight it smelled of sulfur a bit; like someone just lit a whole bunch of matches.
Any ideas? Could this be from a bad tank of gas? I filled it up with Canadian Tire gas early saturday morning, but i didn't drive much on saturday. MAF/O2 sensor?
thanks
Tim
