  • Opinions: 2001 Jetta GLS

I am looking at 2001 Jetta GLS, manual transmission, about 91,000 km.

Can I get some honest opinions on this vehicle? I am a little cautious to buy a used vehicle.

I cant find alot of good info online, but I was pointed here. Am I asking for trouble? Good car?

    Thanks!

I had a 2000 Jetta GLS 5 speed manual, and it was the best car i ever had.
I put 200 000KM on it in 23 months and only had to change the water pump a week before i traded it on a 2003 GLI.

Amazing car for the price, only down side is teh engine is loud when driving highway.

Good car. Things you may want to look at: Timing belt, Water pump-has it been changed if so good as its a common problem, check and make sure nothing like the cup holers are bust or the glove compartment door as they are minor but exspensive repairs.

Hey man, Im the guy that suggested this site on cp. Like I said before I own a 01 1.8t GTI and just love it. There a few minor problems that bug me, but nothing thats really that big of deal. When you buy watch out for a few things in the interior:

          1. Glove box door isnt broken
          2. Middle arm rest latch isnt broken
          3. Cup holders still move up and down
          4. Door sensors; make sure that lights come on when you open your door and that the door chims when you leave your keys in.

These are pretty common problems with this gen. 1 and 4 have happened to me, but these arent that big of deal as my glove box is always closed when driving and I dont really care about the door chim.

          Engine wise, like stated before:
Make sure the timing belt has been changed as they are expensive and need to be done around 100k I believe.

You are goign to have problems with these cars, but realistically if they are problems like mine, you dont notice them and you should really like the car.
When you do things right, people won't be sure you've done anything at all.

Everthing on these cars are fairly solid. Just a buch of cosmetic things you need to wach out for. Take it to one of our calagary sponsors for an inspection.

i've got a 2001 jetta tdi (so lets exclude anything mechanical, cause its all different). The rest of the car has held up well. I had the glove box problem, but i dont think anything else has gone wrong really. My big issue was the fabric i got stuck with in the interior.. its a fuzzy almost velourish fabric... catches lint and fur like crazy. You may or may not have the same. I love my tdi.. its a great car. We have pretty good mechanics for VW to here in calgary. George, up at Tunedub, and some gooders at the dealerships too.

What are they asking for it?

check air conditioning and heated seats work and brake lights work but that was a recall so should have been done.
