  • VW Space Up! Concept

Volkswagen's Space Up! follows closely in the footsteps of its Frankfurt Show star sibling, the Up! city car concept. A 'wonder of space', the 'New Small Family' car is potential forerunner to a new range of Volkswagens, presently branded under the all-encompassing 'Up!' umbrella.

Capable of chiefly lasting for more than just one life cycle, the firm hopes a re-branded, re-invigorated range for the 21st century will emulate the success of its classic models that have stood the test of time, namely the known-the-world-over Beetle and bullet-proof reputed Golf.

Offering maximum space on a small platform measuring less than 3.7 metres in length and just over 1.6 metres in width, the Space Up! is a truly space-efficient vehicle, offering little in the way of gimmicks and much in substance. A multivariable interior offers a variety of seat positions and allows stowage of up to 1,005 litres of cargo.

The Space Up! offers no less than four adult seats, with the rear bench easily converted to seat children using integrated child seats. A high seating position and innovative anatomy-adaptive airflow foam cushions - both in the front and rear seats - will make the production version of VW's Space Up! a more comfortable place to be. A touchscreen with integrated 3D graphics and proximity sensors aids control of numerous functions, while another monitor displays tidbits such as vehicle speed, fuel level and range as well as CO2 emissions.

Extraordinarily evident between Frankfurt's Up! concept and the Tokyo Show debuted Space Up! concept car seen here is their common design philosophy. The Space Up!'s 'amiable charisma' clashes not with its 'straight-lined, confident design'. The four-door nature of the new concept does however allow several deviations from Up!-flavoured styling cues, although a largely familiar Up! front end is distinguished through more diagonal headlamps that allow for a bulkier fender extending into the car's side profile, and through the more forward nature of an aggressively positioned A-pillar.

At the rear, the Up! family range tautens, the Space Up!'s styling near identical to that of the Frankfurt concept. The taillights are integrated into the transparent hatch, split 1/3 to 2/3, the rear door offering an entry width of 101cm.

            I love it.

After not being such a big fan of current generation VW designs, I'll be happy once we start to see some of these concept cars and new production cars come to market (Tiguan, Scirocco, etC)

                Last VW Up details

It's been a while since we've heard any news on Volkswagen's upcoming Up microcar, but a new report has revealed some more details on the little city car. The new information indicates the styling of the production car will be very close to that of the concept and that the car will be powered by a two-cylinder engine.

According to AutoExpress, the road-going Up will look very similar to the show car — similar to the approach Toyota took with its iQ. Up front, the only real major change is that the Up will get a headlight treatment inspired by the Golf. Out back, the taillights will also be slightly altered.

Inside, the Up's dashboard will feature touch-screen LCD panels for most controls — a new strategy VW has already announced.

Initially, the Up will be offered in two body styles — three-door and five-door. Despite the five-door gaining two additional doors, it will share the exact same wheelbase and length as the three-door. An MPV version of the Up will launch shortly after — as previewed by the Space Up concept — and will likely be sold in the U.S.

Buyers will be able to choose from a turbocharged two-cylinder gas or diesel engine, with both displacing about 0.6L. Thanks to the engines' small size and the addition of a turbocharger, the Up will reportedly see fuel mileage in the 80 to 90 mpg range.

A larger 1.2L three-cylinder powerplant is also said to be under consideration, as are hybrid powertrains.

Two of VW's other brands — Skoda and SEAT — are also slated to get versions of the Up.

Can't they make the VW logo on the hood any bigger?

This just reinforces my opinion that the Mk4 VW's were the most beautiful ever. (I own a Mk4 and a Mk5). I wish I could put the Mk5 mechanicals in the Mk4 body.

                      Re: VW Space Up! Concept

It's only a year to go until Volkswagen launches its new Up! microcar family. The Up! is due on sale in summer 2011 and will eventually be available in three sizes, as part of VW's New Small Family (NSF) generation of city cars. Although the Lupo name was tipped to make a comeback, that's now very unlikely. Expect this to be called Up! in production – complete with annoying exclamation mark that'll surely rank alongside the Kia Cee'd's linguistic graffiti.

                          Re: VW Space Up! Concept

These are among the first spy photos of the new Volkswagen Up! – the city car with which VW will spear into the new affordable small car market around the world. The VW Up! will be pitched upmarket for developed countries, but can be switched to a lower cost mix for more developing markets.
Scooped in the Californian desert testing ahead of a 2011 debut, the VW Up! appears to be as short and stubby as the concept car. Although still lurking beneath several weeks' deliveries of binbags, we can make out the compact footprint of Volkswagen's smallest car which is tipped to cost from around £6000-£7000.

So when does the VW Up! go on sale?

In summer 2011, as one of three Up! bodystyles due to arrive from August 2011. The Lupo name was originally mooted, as tipped by the Up constituent; reflecting how the iRoc became the Scirocco.

Our new VW Up! spy photos reveal the three-door version; a five-door hatchback will be available from launch, while a taller Space Up! microvan will follow. VW is targeting 600,000 sales per year, once the full suite of models is deployed and once global sales have been launched in every market.

Is the VW Up! technically interesting?

The engineering story has chopped and changed since the launch of the original rear-engined, rear-wheel drive Up! concept. Cost and complexity forced a switch to a more conventional front-engined, front-drive layout, much of the architecture shared with the previous-gen Polo.

As previously reported by Georg Kacher, here is how the three-door Up! compares to the current Polo: wheelbase 2450 (Polo 2470mm), length 3450 (3970mm), width 1630 (1680mm), height 1500 (1460mm), front track 1420 (1446mm), tank capacity 35 (45 litres), cargo deck 180 (280 litres), number of seats four (five), weight 800kg (995kg).

What engines will the VW Up have?

                          • 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol, 60bhp
                          • 1.0-litre TFSI four-cylinder petrol, 85bhp
                          • 1.2-litre four-cylinder petrol, 105bhp (from 2012)
                          • 1.2-litre three-cylinder TDI, 75bhp

The new Lupo!! That 1.0L TFSI with a chip would probably rock in that little car! Four bolt too so you can go with the classic wheels!
