torque steer?

my 98 jetta 2L seems to suffer from an unusual amount of torque steer (for a small engine..). It had an alignment done recently, so that shouldnt be it... any other ideas what could cause this?

Could also be strut mounts, ball joints.

Best way to diagnose is having someone with a practiced eye look it all over on a lift I think. This means an experienced VW tech so I would look to either George at TuneDub or Dave of course.

could be normal depending on how fast you drop your clutch.
what are you comparing it with??

oh by the way if you just had an alignment done all those components
should've been checked.

well, is probably worse then anything i've driven. but for the most part, i'd be comparing it to my mk4 tdi, which has significantly more torque (232lb/ft at wheels). Granted, thats a whole different chassis, but still, i hardly notice it on the mk4, and the mk3 is all over the place while accelerating. It's even more accentuated now that i have my soft winter rubber on.

alignment was done at the fountain tire south of chinook. don't kow what their reputation is like, but they are walking dist. to my office... so i used 'em. I con only assume they did their job.. but we all know what ass-u-me-ing does.

Most Fountain Tire's I have delt with seem to be pretty good about their suspension, if anything they are going to tell you its slightly wornt ot try and get you to buy another one so they can make more coin.


Soft rubber I have noticed on my car also makes it hell for torque steer, may just have to be something you live with until you put summer rubber back on.

Still pretty bad with a harder compound summer tire on?
Just to double check, your on flat roads right? Not like old Barlow or something where your torque steering and driving in semi-truck ruts which makes everything interesting to drive over there.

yeah, i thought it was the road at first, but i've noticed it a bit on spots that aren't totally grooved out (hard to find in this city.. ). And yeah, felt it with all seasons as well. However.. the all seasons on in the summer were really cheap tires i think (came with car), so it may just be that they were crappy tires, and now (althogh they are good tires) i have soft winters.

I'll keep playing and try to narrow down the situation where it is worst. I have to get it to george for a service soon anyways. He can confirm nothing is falling apart while he is under there.

i have this issue with my caddy , and it has no torque if i am not paying attention and goose it the wheel pounds out of my hand . i dont get it

I think what happens is that you have bushings that are plastic or rubber and they get worn away, and then there is slip in the steering or suspension components. When torque hits them they slip and jerk the wheel around or move the tires around.

Yeah has to be under stress so you would notice it under breaking or acceleration. It would either be movement in the steering wheel or the feeling that the car was changing track on the road or pulling to one side. Then once your speed levels out it would be fine. Feels a lot like torque steer.
