Can any of this have something to do with either me disconnecting the battery (to install my CAI) or the breather tube (the breather tube seems like the only thing that I touched that runs remotely near the location where the noise is coming from)?

I think disconnecting the battery will cause a TBA to have to be re-done.

I've been looking on the vortex quite a bit the last couple of days since we had some problems doing my TBA. Some people say that the only way to do a TBA is with the VAG-COM or with an APR chip and the optional TBA module. Others say the following procedure works:

      1. Open the hood and drivers door (this may not be necessary. it probably just makes it easier to hear the TBA being done.)
      2. Make sure A/C is off, engine is not "too hot".
      3. Turn the key to the on position, but don't start the car and don't depress the gas pedal.
      4. You should now hear the whining coming from the throttle body.
      5. Wait a couple minutes then start the car and let it idle for a couple of minutes.
      6. Done.

There is a lot of debate as to whether or not this actually does a TBA. There isn't much doubt in my mind that it is definitely doing something with the throttle body, but it may not be a proper alignment. People have monitored the throttle body setting with the VAG-COM while doing this and have reported absolutely no change in the settings, so that would indicate that an alignment is not being done.

duh, I didnt watch the videos. NOt sure why it is happening while running, maybe cause you have never let it complete a cycle after disconnecting the battery. VAG COM it properly on Thursday and we will see.

In the mean while, try turning the key to on but dont start the engine, leave it here and you will hear a clicking followed by a high pitched noise that should disappear after a minute or so.

            My guesses;

the settings wouldn't change typically (that would suggest it was wrong before) but following a battery /ECU disconnect there are no settings until after this has been performed.

Oh I get it... that's a screwed up pulley!! Nothing really to worry about... just goto the dealer and have the check it out under warranty.

When you step on the gas... the pulley spins faster... in theory... reducing vibration of that particular trouble spot.

Thanks for the response guys. I'm gonna go try that ignition throttle body alignment procedure. I have a strange feeling that its going to be the pulley issue though. It almost sounds like the sound is coming from further down in the engine compartment.

Well, I tried the ignition thing and no dice. The thing still makes that sound. I tried feathering the gas when it was making the sound and sure enough when I give it some gas, the sound goes away until it comes back to idle. I'll have to get the dealer to check it out. And yeah, they better not tell me it has something to do with the CAI... or even worse the antenna.

What is the thing that the breather hose connects to and does this thing run all the time? I'm trying to arm myself for the dealer.

Don't worry about that. If your dealer gives you ****... just tell them to f**k off and leave.

I hate all of this ********... people shouldn't have to "arm" themselves for dealers... those damn mofos!

                            Mystery solved!!

The damn sound was coming off the intercooler pipe located in the passenger side wheel well.

Something must be loose and rubbing/rattling.

I think I'll wait and just have the dealership fix it as I'm going in for service right away anyhow.

I feel so much better now that I know what the hell is making that sound.:urspecial
