Strange Noise!

Hey Guys I've been getting a strange noise the last week or so on startup. The sound is a higher pitched sound and usually goes away after 5-10 min but it seems to be taking longer lately. It seems to be coming from the engine on the passenger side.



Here are a couple movies I shot with a digital camera (so the quality is not all that great - turn up the volume). One video is from inside the vehicle and the other from the engine compartment.

Fans and AC were turned off.

no idea dude ask on vortex and perhaps visit northland.. your engine seems quite loud too unless its just the camera

A lot of it is the camera, but you can pick out that high pitched sound (especially from inside the vehicle) very clearly.

I'm taking my car in next week for the 8k service. I will ask them about it then. I kinda want to get an idea before hand to see if anyone else has had this noise.

My first thought would be the Secondary Air Injection Pump. It pumps air into the exaust in order to lower emmisions and can make a variety of sounds... But from memory it's under the airbox on a Jetta 1.8T.

Other than that no other ideas...

Secondary air injection pump? Does that have anything to do with the breather tube?

Throttle body alignment is correct, although it should not adapt every time...check for error codes with a Vag Com. I had a customer have this issue and his would throw an error saying the adaption failed. Retrying with the VAG COM did not fix it and it seems to try again every time the key is turned on.

What is the vehicle doing when it does the throttle body alignment? What parts are causing the chirping sound?

i can't wait to see the vag-com in action. i want to do a TBA on my car and check block 120 which is the MAF for faults.. should be cool.. perhaps i'll buy one myself we'll see..

the throttle itself is a servo that is controlled by the ECU (not your foot). The positioning of the 'flap' that lets air in is very sensitive, especially around idle to part throttle. This is why the ECU needs to know exactly what signals to apply to the throttle to get it to open a certain amount. If there isn't a ADP OK registered in the ECU (i.e. after diconnecting power to the ECU or if the last attempt failed) then the adaption process will be run the next time the key is turned on.

My initial guess was throttle body alignment, but from listening to the videos, it shouldn't sound like that. Also, I don't think the TBA should occur when the engine is running.

Then again, having all of 3 days experience with TBA's, what would I know? (I'm Simon's customer with the apparently non-aligning throttle body).
