    I have only ever had to rebuild one alternator in the 20+ years I have been around VW's. All it needed was a new regulator and brushes.

      Hmm ... I'll have to make sure I remember that. I wonder if even with a new alternator if the regulator could still be at fault.

        Don't just replace parts.....track down what is not working and fix just that. I just had an alternator tested for free at Parts Source...took 3 mins to do (with the alternator out of the car)

          The regulator is built into the alternator.

            which, in my experience, is why the alternator usually needs a rebuild coz it was that overheating that took out the reg unit!

              Good to know good to know.

              Edit:

              Update on the shipping total, it was $63.50 to expedite the shipment. Which leaves me still at half the cost of one in town. As much as I loathe not helping out local businesses sometimes the economics of it are horribly biased.

                120 amp alternator 320.00 local purchase and i believe it comes with a 5 year warranty.
