  • Window regulator problem

Hey folks, I've done a quick search and figure that my problem is the power window regulator on the drivers side since my window dropped down and now it won't come back up.

I was reading up on this issue in the threads and figured it was a quick fix from the dealerships. My question though, is this a known-issue with mk4 VW's and will it be covered by the dealership even if my car is far out of warranty?

    Thx for the help guys.
    Cheers!

If it's out of warranty don't count on it.

The repair kit which has clips for both windows is around 70 bucks. The labor is at least an hour per side.

I did mine myself and it wasn't too bad - there are good walkthroughs on vortex with pictures of every step. There is one hex bit you need to buy for the door lock which is about 10 bucks, I got mine at nappa.

If your car is outside of 4yr/80k then unfortunately VW won't pay for it. Dealership rate is 1.6 hours per side so expect to pay about $275 for the update kit intalled.

Does the motor still move or does the glass just not move? It is just the window clips some dealerships might cover it due to the fact it should have been a safety recall but they got away with a loyalty replacement deal. If it is actually the power window motor that is broken they it is going to cost a whole heck of a lot more.

Unless the vehicle is just out of warranty, the dealership is not going to cover it. There is no recall or offical warranty extention for the window clamps.

Just talked to the folks at 5th ave, and since I'm not the original owner it is not covered under the 7yr warranty for the clips. Hopefully it'll just cost me 275 to fix.

To answer your question Brent, I can still hear the motor running when I try to use the switch, but nothing happens so I'm hoping that it's only the clips that are broken.

I would just do what Geoff said to do and fix it yourself then. Really it is stupid that it is not a recall item. They know it is a problem with them, they always have and it can be a real safety issue if you window drops while you are driving the rogers pass in the middle of the winter.

Does anybody know if the Calgary dealerships have the repair kit in stock? I might just pick it up myself.

George at TuneDub may be able to get it done for less than a dealership.

I bought the repair kit needed, but my only problem is that one of the screws holding in the door lock module is stripped and so the 8mm triple square tool isn't able to grab anything. Any tips on getting out stripped screws

Really, how can this not be a recall by now? Lucky that mine were replaced under warranty.

You should send an angry letter to vw.
