  • Rims for Calgary Winters?

O.k., so after rocking the infamous "Steelies" with VW Beatle Hubcaps for the last 3 winters... I have finally decided to upgrade. Not sure if it is wise to invest in "winter-only" rims or not... but if so, here are my final choices.

Was just wondering what ya'll thought about
    a) Is it even worth it to get rims for the winter (ie. will they be basically destroyed after a single season?; and...
    b) If not... which one would you recommend... or others (show pics) if you got ideas!

    Thanks all.
P.S. Ride is an '03 BMP 20th GTi.
    P.S. These will be 16" winters-only to replace the 18" summers-only. Cheers...

    Choice #1 - Enkei FN-18

    Choice #2 - Konig Heatsink

    Choice #3 - Konig Quiz

Choice #4 - OE Replica Audi Wheels?

Choice #5 - Your crazy... stick with the steelies bro.

Just get cheap as possible (steelies) IMO, winter is harsh with all the sand and gravel, ice chunks and frigid temps. Steelies still look pretty sweet!

I don't like steelies at all. Alloys are stronger and get better fuel econ if they are light. I have my oem 15 inch avus alloys, and they are going on 5 years looking just fine. I wouldn't get anything with a dish or that has spokes that stick out though.

steelies for the above reasons and one more. Sometimes its inevitable that you are going to hit the curb or you just dont know where the curb is in the snow. It would be a shame to damage nice rims for that.

I'd stay away from anything with big 'holes' in the wheel. Go with something like the Avus with more protection for the discs and calipers. Mesh wheels like the first couple pics will pack up with snow and be a total PITA to clean.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I guess I'll most likely go steelies then or a cheaper set of OEM's. Well... either that... or I can pick up some killer hubcaps at CrappyTire for the steelies.... NOT. Woot!

Honestly some of those are "too nice" for winter IMO, especially the Enkei's

Dished wheels or wheels with lip are going to take a HUGE beating. You will ruin them fast. Rocks get up inside there and chip the hell out of them. AND they are so so hard to keep clean. The brake dust and salt and sand will ruin the finish faster if they are dirty.

I would rock OEM wheels, Audi or VW, in the winter.
