  • Illegal?

My boyfriend used my car last night and was pulled over at a Check Stop.
The cops informed him that the front plate I have on my car is illegal and should be removed, has anyone else had this problem?

The type of plate is similar to the German in length, but is made from actual license plate material that is on cars back from where I am from originally, so it's fully reflective.
Luckily, they did not issue him a ticket (month end remember....) and gave him warning.
Maybe it's 'cause he's male and non-white...? I dunno but i've driven past many a cop and they've never motioned to me (joys maybe of being a blonde..?LOL!)

Any thoughts or someone who knows more about this?

Please do not associate any race issue in the first place. It is possible that the officer you encounter found it distracting.

I wouldn't remove it, even though it probably is technically illegal. Some cops just enjoy finding something innocent to point out as being illegal.

I can see those front plates being not legal (i.e. not to code or spec). Maybe illegal in other jurisdictions where you are required to have a front plate. I can't see them being illegal in Alberta though as Alberta doesn't require them on the front and thus would only serve as a purely cosmetic feature.

A question I have is this: If cops are pulling people over for stupid things like this and saying that it is illegal, where can I get a copy of the laws pertaining to illegal vehicle modifications. I've searched and have found nothing yet.

          that's my point.
It's purely cosmetic - besides, my car was brought in from BC and all I did was remove the BC plate holder and attach mine - so does that mean if I'd left the plate holder they'd still tell me to remove it?
It does not do anything except look pretty - if it was a mod that altered the car in some way to deem it "dangerous" fine, i would not have any issues.

It's staying on - I paid enough for it.

Well you can buy those fake front plates that have custom phrases, but who knows if they are illegal.

But don't assume there's ANY logic to traffic laws. Lately cops have been enforcing the "enlarged exhaust" law (1984). If your diameter of your exhaust tip is larger than stock (EVEN IF QUIETER) they give you a 90 dollar ticket. That also means those honda accords with the 1 inch exhausts are illegal if they move up to 2 inch.

Khyron, how did you hear of this "enlarged exhaust" law? Is there a booklet or pamplet on stuff like this? I wanna know because it's hard to bend the rules if you don't know what the rules are.:mrtongue:

Guys on other forums getting hit hard (Hondas, Porsches, etc) - for the most part us VW guys don't have big tips, so we don't hear about it. But some VW tips (any on this page: http://www.pgperformance.com/tips.htm ) would get you a ticket.

Pamplet lol - it's the highway traffic act, and its huge. Just read forums and call the PD if curious (I asked about tint).

I was trying to get my rear Euro plate (I did have it on) approved by the Alberta government Traffic division, but those stubborn bastards... Anyways they told me I can't have any other plate on my vehicle other than a registered Alberta plate. So I told them, its not really a "plate." :mrfinger:

My front Euro plate says FLUIDIC... and my rear Alberta plate says FLUIDIC.
