Re: Best Rubber for your baby

Its not about needing a tire that holds up to my everyday driving. Every day I'm not taking corners like a track star, I completely agree.

But that one time when I need it, I want it to be there. In an unexpected situation. When I take an exit ramp a little too quick. When some guy slams on his brakes in front of me. When I feel like driving like a complete prick and drifting my car around the McKenzie Towne traffic circle. On those days, I want the best tire I can afford. Its absolutely not about my fears kicking in before the tires give out. Its about the road being a dangerous place and me wanting to be in control, not just most of the time, but all of the time.

    end rant...

I know exactly what you mean, and i am not saying you are wrong at all for wanting good tires, but the simple truth is a lot of tires are way beyond the capability of the car, not matter what the situation. cars lose control not only because tires lose grip, but because the suspension is not strong or stiff enough, or the brakes lock up, etc, and on a stock honda civic or what-have-you, the car is going to lose control from other things long before the tires break, whether you are on Kumho or Michelin (assuming we are comparing hardcore sport tires to hardcore sports tires... I am not referring to 711's vs Pilot PS2's)

Yes going to certain tires enhances abilities that other tires may not, but spending 80% more money may only give you 10% more tire ability, and that 10% more tire may not do anything for someone because the rest of their car (and abilities) were long ago surpassed by the ability of the tire.

Again, I am not saying that a good tire is a waste of money... I am just saying that it is not the end all/be all... If safety is your only reason for a "top quality" tire, then there are a lot of other ways you could spend money on your car to improve safety vs only tires that would benefit the average driver in an emergency situation even more sometimes. Tires are definitely important, but so are brake improvements, suspension improvements, and even just simple driving habits, which cost nothing to change...

No man... They sent my stock order and forgot to put it on, but they have supposedly shipped it on its own and I hope to see it tuesday or wedensday...

The ES100 is a decent tire for sure. When it came out it was one of the better in its class... Now there are a lot more tires equal to it for sure, but it is a nice tire...

I have some General Exclaim UHP's on my 20's and they are awsome. They handle excellent in the rain. Im not sure for snow though and I know if you do racing they arnt the best either but for ordinary street they are awsome

If there was, there would only be one tire on the market.

Everybody has a different opinion and to what is best, and it is just that... An opinion.
In my humble opinion I've had both the Michelin Pilot Sport PS2's and currently drive on Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3's. Personally, the Goodyears are more comfortable, handle like snot in the rain (ie. almost gave a white M3 a run for his money) and look killer. If I were to by again, I would go with the F1's.

That said, you can definitely get into a lot of cheaper tires (a.k.a. rubber) that I'm sure will suit the performance you require. If price is a factor, I'm sure some of the Falken's would be just fine.

              Deuce out.

                Hey Freddy,
Give this vortex thread a peek.

Those Micheline Pilots are what VW put on the MK IV 337's 18" BBS (my car) & the MK IV 20th Anniversary Aristos 18" Amazing tire, but they are usually quite pricey. Quite the deal on the 'tex.
