  • Made In The USA VWs??

In order to combat a tough exchange rate between the U.S. dollar and the euro, Volkswagen is considering opening a new factory in the United States. VW has traditionally made little profit on US vehicles - compared to its sales elsewhere - but now the automaker is looking at a new factory to offset these costs.

VW built cars in Pennsylvania until 1988 and the German carmaker currently builds VWs for the U.S. market in Mexico and Brazil (in addition to European factories), but increased demand for products might dictate the need for a U.S. factory, according to Focus, a German magazine.

VW's CEO, Martin Winterkorn, said that VW is looking to expand its Detroit-area U.S. headquarters and that, if exchange rates don't improve, the automaker will be forced to build a new factory.

Or maybe no VWs at all........

Volkswagen’s troubles as of late have been well-publicized, with its U.S. operations hemorrhaging nearly $1 billion over each of the past three years.

The situation is rather grim—so much so, in fact, that BusinessWeek says many conversations among executives are now suggesting that the company may not keep its operations in the U.S. According to the article, a source close to the automaker says: “For the first time in some time, the phrase ‘If we are to stay in the U.S.’ precedes a lot of conversations at VW.”

That scary bit of context comes amidst a turnaround plan that BW is characterizing as a “last-ditch drive” to return Wolfsburg’s U.S. operations to profitability. Recent high-profile advertising campaigns have largely failed to ignite sales of the company’s key Passat and Jetta models, and VW has suffered widespread and severe quality issues in recent years, which have garnered them low marks on a number of key industry customer satisfaction metrics. Officials will likely have to right these two areas if it has any hope of finding its way into the black in the U.S.

Are their sales in Canada and Mexico better?

If VW was to leave, surely Audi would stay? I can't imagine an Audi-less landscape. They might bring in cars like the A3 Coupe since there would be no GTI.

They are going to find it hard to compete with cars like the new BMW 1 series and I am sure that new offerings in the hatch market are killing them too.

Does VW not remember why they closed the Westmoreland plant in the first place??? (poor quality and high wages). Damn unions spoilt it once. Do you really think things would be any different.

                    VW US plant official....

Volkswagen has officially announced that it will build a vehicle production facility in the U.S., although the location of the plant still remains unclear. VW also announced that it will build supporting engine and transmission plants in North America, but these plants will likely be built in Mexico or Canada.

Stefan Jacoby, CEO of Volkswagen Group of America Inc., says the announcement of where the U.S. plant will be located will be announced within the next six months, and Jacoby expects the first vehicles to roll off the U.S. production floor in just over three years.

It has been reported that VW will setup shop in Rocky Mount, North Carolina — where the German automaker has been rumored to have purchased land — although VW has yet to confirm that report.

The new plant should help VW with its goal of selling 800,000 VW vehicles in the U.S. by 2018. It remains unclear which vehicles VW will build here in the U.S.

It'll probably turn out like ford where all the decent models will be in europe, and we will get the shaft here in NA.

I actually read an interview with some VW execs where they said "the reason we don't sell cars in north america is that we don't build cars for north americans, we build cars for europeans and then try to sell them in north america".

I'd guess that cheaper and less optioned VW's will be hitting the scene somewhere down the line. Bad news.

The good news is you'll be able to fit a bigger slurpee in the new vehicles.

Ya I wouldn't count on that happening in the near future.
