  • dimmer wire for head unit

Been looking for ages for a wiring diagram to tell me the color of the cars wire that you connect to dim the radio when you turn on the lights. My head unit wont dim so i figured its just not connected but then i found a wiring diagram that said there was no wire for this in the 2000 GTIs. find it hard to believe but maybe thats why mine aint working.

But then also found a reference saying it is Grey w Blue stripe but im not sure this was the correct year. anyone know if this is correct or what the color really is?

    Thx

i thought grey with blue, but my deck has a manual brightness control, so although i hooked it up, i don't know if it does anything.

make sure you do it rite or you will have a harness fire.
have a wrench handy and the hood open to disconnect the battery.
a lot of people are color blind and don't know it.

            Thanks for the warning.

Actually i pulled the head unit and found there is an adapter harness in there with the brown and black plugs connected into it so i guess it should be ok. It was a bit dark to actually find the grey/blue wire though so ill check it out tommorow.

You have to do a LOT of things wrong to start a harness fire. For one the fuse would pop far before you had any long lasting problem. Just be sure you use a solid ground and solder and heat shrink all your wires.

Yeah no worries with the electrics, got plenty of experience with that and put a few radios n alarm sysytems in in my time but im not doing the whole radio just want to find out why the dimmer aint working! Seems odd with the adapter harness in there but ill find out tommorow.

Re: dimmer wire for head unit

OK this one jsut got weird. found the wire, its connected up properly but when i measured the voltage on it its only giving 5v out and strangley cycling between 2 to 5 volts on a 1 secondish cycle. Thinking it could be the radio I unplugged the head unit and it still did the same with no load on it. Traced it right back to the light switch where its still doing the same.

For any car elecs out there should the light switch give out 12v on this wire or is this normal. guess the radio aint dimming coz it needs 12v.

                  Beeezarrrrrr
