Mirror trim ring removal on mk1

Anyone know how to get the frigging thing off? I need to get the door panel off and I've found every screw clip etc but it seems to be holding by the trim ring that goes around the little mirror joystick thing.

Any help appreciated!!!

i think it's threaded into a flat nut on the backside. does the ring have 4 little grooves in it, like an antenna mounting nut?

It looks like it but they are old and hard to distinguish. I'm positive that it unscrews but don't know how to persuade it to do so.

wrap something soft around it that wont mar the surface and try some channel locks.?.
