    Re: Trade in Value

That is brutal. Southgate Vw said about 3500 for my corrado. The last one I saw they sold there was listed at 15900!!!2 years older than mine and 20k more. Used car dealerships are mostly criminals.(not literally obviously)

        Re: Trade in Value

I agree that a lot of dealerships lowball trades but I guess what it boils down to is that the ball is 100% in your court. Either accept the trade value or walk away and try sell the thing privately. I mean, if you know that the "stealership" is going to lowball you or try to steal the trade (paying wholesale) why would you even bother? Everyone here knows that you can "ask" retail by selling privately so why wouldn't you? Probably because usually its a pain in the ass! I've been inn the business long enough to know that if the customer is dumb enough to accept a lowball trade on a vehicle they "know" is worth thousands more selling privately, then they deserve just that. Again, the dealership isn't forcing anyone to accept "trade" value!!

Thats all I have to say on that matter!!!

            Re: Trade in Value

The only thing is, it seems that they would offer you a decent price, because it gets new vehicles off the lot. If they wanted to get me into a new gti and know they could sell my car for 8k for example. Then they get 25k out of my pocket. If they are gonna give me 3k for it, I will tell em to f off and go somewhere else. I think it hurts buisness for them in a way.

Yes, it sucks to get lowballed at a dealership. Especially when you know they are going to sell it for a lot more. On the other hand, used cars take up real estate on their lot and they become inventory. These become depreciating assets sitting on the lot and they will likely end up selling them off to somewhere else (correct me if I am wrong).

                Re: Trade in Value

The current economic climate here says that dealerships are pretty much guaranteed to unload their existing stock, especially with 3 months of prime selling season ahead of them. With that in mind they don't need to discount their new car prices bugger all, and the don't need to offer bugger all for your trade.

It's not unlike construction, real estate, or rent: if someone doesn't like the price and is unwilling to buy then meh.. Someone else will be along shortly.

Really depends on the model and make.... gm cant push cars off their lots unless they promise to pay off your debts.

That is very true. When we went to buy the GF a new car (a chevy optra) they just wouldn't stop piling on the discounts, rebates and incentives. She got $2000 in rebates for 'loyalty' and to send her 92 sunbird to 'car heaven'.

All tolled she got a brand new Optra for 0 down and 0% interest for $12,000 and change all taxes and PDI in. If the car, on it's 5th birthday, crumbles in to dust and has zero value she still will have paid less than the depreciation on my GTI.

The US manufacturers are SO screwed.

$12,000 all in is the best deal on a new car I have ever heard of.

I think the MSRP on a base Hyundai Accent is like $15,999 still?

Me too! That's insane. You'd think this was 1977 instead of 2007.
