  • Trade in Value

I decided to take my car into the Ford dealership in olds (I didnt feel like driving to a VW dealeship in Calgary) to get a trade in value on my car.
Its a 2001 GLS 1.8T with nearly 9 grand of mods done to it and 110 000km on it. They said they would give me $8860
I wasnt expecting like 20 grand or anything but thats a huge hit.
What do you think it would sell for elsewhere (privately or at a VW dealership)?

9 grand of mods is worth about 1 grand on your price. Thats sad but true. Better to part out the car first, always.

The price depends on the condition of the car but...

I would say you could probably get 14k ? Really depends on the car and how it looks and feels and runs.

They would probably sticker it at 15k at the stealership after they bought it from you at 8.8k. I'm guessing.

        Re: Trade in Value

If you are on 19's and lowered though it will ride like crap

Blow off valve or something sounds like crap (to the dealership's ears)

        etc.

Those things will lower the value.

I think the three biggest factors in selling the car are... paint condition, interior condition (leather helps) and if it runs quiet and smooth.

Yeah I have 20'' on my car. No blow of valve though.
My paint is good and I have leather with heated seats and the only thing that needs to be done is my idler bearing needs to be changed...
And i still get hooped haha

I suggest you sell your 20's separately and sell the car with the OEM wheels it came with.

Yeah if you want to sell it, take the wheels off for sure.

                Yeah no kidding.
I dont think im selling it though.
I just wanted a rough estimate as to how much the car was worth...
I cant afford what I really want (Next to Billip's car of course lol)

                  Re: Trade in Value

I wrote this in another post about car prices. I buy/sell Tdis. I get them from auction and private listings. I am thinking your car will fetch maybe $9k at one. Mods add nothing to the value of your car unless you can sell it to a teenager. IMO. Mods are purely for your enjoyment. Try and sell with them on or like the other thread said "part it out". Always more $$$ in parting out. Then again selling the parts becomes a real pain in the A$$. I personally watch how much I put into a car and plan ahead. If I was planning on pimping a car up $9K I would just buy a car in another category with that extra $9k. I know modding is addictive. I have caught myself with my Tdi.
Honestly....I am buying 02 jetta TDIs with 100km on them for $10-$12000
Use that to compare to yours. Sorry for the bad news. Sell private and you can fetch more. I dont know what the market holds for a 1.8 privately

                          Re: Trade in Value

Sadly the dealerships are pretty bad at trade in prices. I had my car appraised for trade, 2003 wolfsburg 85,000km, auto, with Aristoes, not other mods and they were going to offer me 8500. My car guy told me it would be listed on the lot at around 18,500 certified pre-owned.

Needless to say I am holding on to the car and will sell privately if I like the new Jetta TDI wagons when they come out.

That definalty seems to be the way to go.
Ill keep the car unless the right offer comes along

A buddy of mine just tried to trade in his 2001 ford escape, loaded, leather, V6 etc. $2000 was the offer by the dealership. He paid roughly $38000 for it new. Ouch.
