  • Weird carwash incident...

This weekend I was at an Esso touchless wash and when the rinse jets passed by the front of my car I heard & felt a HEAVY hesitation and then my car stalled!

I started it back up no problem (although it was idling a bit rough) and I had a CEL for a moment but then it went out.

I'm wondering, did I suck some water into my engine? I had my air conditioning on with the fan speed set to 2 but other than that i was just sitting there.

When I left the car wash I pulled out of the lot and everything appeared normal (CEL had gone out, idling fine) but when I pulled away in first gear I hit what seemed like a rev limiter at 3000 rpm. I then just drove back home on side streets at low speed and below 3000 rpm and parked my car so I could inspect it.

Lifted the hood - everything was dry. Check my CAI and filter - everything looked normal.

I then got back in and drove around with no issues.

    Anyone know what this was?

Stock intake? I know on my car that the air comes in just under the hood lip (you can see the plastic mesh there) so maybe some water got sprayed in there for a second?

No, Neuspeed CAI. So it sits in front of my wheel well. But I have never had this happen before in the last 50+ car washes I've had.

Maybe it was just a freak occurence and for whatever reason some water got sucked up briefly.

This would happen on my VR6, when the coilpack would get wet. Everything would go back to normal after 15 mins or so. Could be something similar.
I'd like to make a statment!

I would say WAY more likely something like Mitch said than the CAI... at idle the intake won't suck up water even if you spray it on the filter.

            That's a relief.

Chalk one up to freak occurences.

Maybe not freak though, could be a crack in one of your coils

Take a spray bottle on "mist" mode and spray it over the coils, if they arc then you know there's a crack.
That's how you do it for a VR6, might be different for the 1.8T, I might even have no idea what I'm talking about.

Same thing for spark plug cables + distro caps. You should be able to powerwash (to a point) your engine and not have bad things happen.

I'd just check that all your coils are seated firmly - sometimes the pop up a bit.

True dat, sometimes you may get compression leaking through your spark plug insulators if they are old enough.
