Are these units still available at VW dealerships? What is the cost of them these days and how much do they charge to have it install in an '00 GTI? Or is this an easy DIY installation project? I've only heard of the Phatnoise recently so please forgive. I am aware that the main unit is intergrated into the factory headunit, but aside from that I don't know what connections are required. Can someone please explain what connectors/cables I need to? Thanks a bunch.

Re: Where to get Phatnoise around town
It uses the OEM cd changer harness in the trunk. Physically getting it installed is a bit more work on a GTI than a Jetta, but it's not like installing a full stereo or anything. No idea on stock. A Kenwood Music Keg is the same device, in case you come across one.Geoff

Re: Where to get Phatnoise around town
I bought mine almost 2 years ago, and it was the simplest install ever. It comes with a cable that you connect straight to your CD changer in the trunk. There is no running of cables or power hookups. It is quite literally plug and play. The only tricky part is deciding where to put the unit. They recommend you mount it in the CD changers place, and cut a hole in your carpet to allow the removable disk drive to poke through. I just put wrapped mine in bubble wrap and put it over top of my spare tire. It is well hidden.

Re: Where to get Phatnoise around town
I like mine a lot. Only catch is there's no visual interface, so if you have a crap load of artists and you want to go from A to S, you have to scroll through them one at a time, hearing the voice prompt (the voice reads the info, badly)
I have several playlists, then it's fine. Plus 1 master playlist, which is every song on the device. You can flip to genre as well, which helps.
I'd guess under 200 - check the 3 local dealers parts dept, then start checking vortex and our used buy/sell.Geoff

Re: Where to get Phatnoise around town
I did a custom install on my phatbox that eliminates cutting the side cargo pocket and hides the unit.

When scrolling through artists, hold the forward button, it will skip each name and just say the alphbetical letter.
