hey guys new to this forum, ill be at he meet on thursday to get my membership. anyway ive had my 01 vr6 for about a year now and its time for me to start spending some more money on it, so far i just have GLI tails and smoked fender and bumper lights. i want to get a CAI, but im worried about hydro lock due to the filter being in the fender. does anyone have one and if so have you had any problems, also wondering if it comes with a heat sheild or anything along those lines.

as for styling by car is blue and am thinking of getting a shaved black grille, and i need new mirrors and was thinking of getting black mirrors to accent the grille and lights, not sure if they would just stick out and look unfinished any thoughts?

Hydro lock is really not an issue unless you drive into a lake or something. Even deep puddles will be okay in Calgary. But you won't really get any HP from an intake on a VW despite what you may have heard. Its mainly for looks and maybe for engine sound.

Some short ones have heat shields but longer ones generally locate the filter so far forward that you don't need a heat shield.

I think black grill and mirrors could look good, put up some photos of your car and we can make some suggestions or even photoshop the photos to look how you want, there are some talented photoshoppers here. We can make your picture look like you describe and then you can see if you like it?

Hydrolock is bullocks.

I've said it before but here is another kick at the horse. I've had a filter 1 inch above the bottom of my front air damn on my 2003 GTI 1.8t since early 2004, I've also had similar on a number of other cars. I have never experienced more than a mild sputter from disrupted flow and maybe a wee bit o water and I aim for puddles.

I've done similar in my current and prior Neon (before and after turbo), an older 5.0 mustang, a 2.2 turbo daytona shelby and a junky old chevy sprint 1 litre. I had at some point broken each one of these cars but none of them broke due to water in the intake.

On my old diesel truck my dog bumped me and instead of pouring a couple milliliters of a gas/methanol mix down the throttle body i poured close to a half a litre and it still started shortly after. It made some nasty noises for a bit but it started and ran as well as it ever did.

Put on the CAI.

If I were you and had the cake to do it I would drop the suspension and replace the shocks and struts, then I would turbo it and do the exhaust. Then you would notice a difference! LOL

Anyhoo these guys are photoshop kings! I am sure you would get all the help you need. a good site is http://oempl.us/ if you want to go with the oem mods... Lots of treats for my MKV there.

thanks guys for the help guys!! as for turbo and exhaust ill have to save a little for that, but i want to get some Koni coilovers fairly soon, any reviews or suggestions?

I love my CAI - Don't listen to Kor, it's good for 100+ whp!

Ok, maybe not... but it completely transforms the way your car sounds. After putting mine on the engine note is a lot "grumblier" when on the throttle and you get a bit of "psssshhhh" noise when you lift off.

And don't worry about hydro-lock. It ain't gonna happen.

I also recommend getting the "Tornado" air filter from Parts Source lol

(just kidding about that - I got one just for the hell of it and it doesn't do anything special. But it is nice and cheap!)

when i was in seattle i went to a dealership to clear a cel and they had a r32 sitting there in pieces . cause bent rods from a cai ... so i can happen

ahh the nasty west coast, it rains as much there as the sun does shine here, that would have to be the acid test of a CAI indeed.

I remember the first renault Clios coming out in the uk, the deisel? version had an air intake so low they were regularly having hydraulic booms when they drove through puddles. fun times.

I've had water up to my wheel wells 3 times in Calgary. Just don't drive in those flash flooding storms we sometimes get in July. And if you do submerge, don't give it gas, let it stall or turn it off.
