  • Couple 2001 TDI Q's

I just recently bought a 5spd 2001 Golf GLS TDI. Just a couple questions for the people that also own a TDI. I notice when driving the engine noise get a abit louder at times even tho i am crusing at a steady speed on flat ground. Is this normal? Other question is the car seems like it miss fires very rarely that causes the car to jerk. Between appx 1800 and 2300rpm's. Only does it once and then its fine. Its not like a one after the other thing. I was told to unplug the maf and see if it still did it. It doesnt but ofcourse is gutless. Any way of testing the MAF with a volt meter or other device? The car is a lease return and has had all maintenece kept up and done at the dealer. Doesnt seem to burn oil and is at the same level as i bought it a couple weeks ago. Redlines without hesitation so its not the intake clogged. Any chance of it being the fuel filter? I did notice a air bubble in the clear fuel line?

    Thanks, Chris

Air bubbles in the fuel line is normal. Take the whole air filter box out and the intake tube that feeds the box. Check the screen in the tube, my guess is it is plugged up. As for the cutout diesels don't "miss fire" so to say as there is no spark but it does sound like a fuel filter problem, what was the last time it was changed?

Could also be the MAF sensor. It is common and causes intermittant problems like you are experiencing.

ok so it has finally thrown a code. and is getting worse. will cut out for a couple seconds on the highway and has no power. In town if i am stopped for a couple seconds idleing power returns. good indication its the fuel filter and its taking time to build some pressure to get power back? What are peoples reviews on the 20$ vag-com knockoff on ebay? I take it wouldnt work too good? I am not worried about changing settings as much as i am about checking codes. Or does anyone in edmonton have it i could pay to scan the car?

          Thanks, Chris

Just prefill the filter and you should be ok. As for the fleabay cable, waste of time and $$. Check the link at the top of the forums for the vag-com list.
