I've driven a 150hp 1.8t, 180hp 1.8T, 12v VR6 and 24v VR6 and I have to say, 24v VR6 ftw.
The 1.8t will give you a little better gas mileage though.
Actually I think if you search the forums we had this debate less then a year ago.Jay

Re: 1.8T vs. vr6
My next car will probably be NA. Even though my 1.8 is technically quicker, it's not smooth like a 325, or even my 6 cyl supra. And I remember arguing that the 1.8 was much better on gas, but the result was it's only 1 or 2 mpg at best.Last edited by Khyron; 04-14-2007, 10:53 AM.Geoff

Re: 1.8T vs. vr6
the ******* answer.....the number of valves.
the mk3 only came with the 12v VR6, while the MK4 had a 12v and 24v option. The 12V produces slightly less power than the 24V, 173hp vs 190hp, and the 24V came with the 6 speed I believe exclusivly (someone correct me on this).
Mods wise however the 12V is significantly cheaper to modify as there is not as much selection for the 24v. It has also been noted that while the 24v breathes better NA, if you are going turbo the 12v is just the better way to go. The 6 speed is also an issue with the turbo applications just due to not being able to stay in gear long enough under boost. A wander over to dubberz.com and a word with **OZ** one of the mods who owns a HPA 24V turbo up for sale can answer any questions you have regarding heavy modifications to the engine.Team Highschool
