  • Considering buying a wolfsburg, need help.

My dad is looking for a new car and he saw a 2001 wolfsburg that he likes. The car has 110K km and is in really good condition, it pulls hard and its too fast(i drive a 2L lol). The car started fine, but when it reached the optimal temp it started to hesitate every 20-30 or so seconds. It felt like it was gonna turn off and it would drop down by 200 RPM or so. Now im thinking this is due to spark plugs or fuel filter...maybe something else, can someone fill me in to what it could be?

Also another problem was that you could hear a weird noise when it was idling, but the owner said that its the Turbo, now ive never owned a turbo car and neither has my dad, but a turbo is spinning at idle? That doesnt sound right.

    Any help would be great.

i wouldnt think a turbo at idle would have enough energy to make much noise at all. It wasnt the alternator was it? if it was the turbo then it would get rapidly noisier/ higher pitch as it went past 2000 to 3000 rpm. if it was an aftermarket turbo it could make more noise. fi it was the alternator it would be lower pitch more of a burr than a whine.

Id have a look at the belt, the alternator and the turbo. An old racing trick to try and track down a noise on an engine is to get a hard rod or bar (wood or metal) and press it on to an engine where you think the noise may be coming from then touch the other end to your ear, you can find all sorts of noises like that. everyone always looks at me like im a wierdo when i use it but it cant be beaten. years of track side decisions have proven it to me.

If your deffo interested id tell the guy you need an inspection on it n run it to georges. hell sort you out.

If you mean the hesitation where you think it might stall, then it idles fine again, I'm pretty sure that's normal as mine and Ryans 1.8s both did it. Not every 30 seconds though, and not down to 200 rpm! But it does feel like it might stall. Never has.

Definate inspection with a VW guy. Could be the Alt and could be way more than you'd think - a refurbed alternator is 1400 bucks.

some times at lights when im idling my revs drop down to maybe 600-700 rpm and jump right back up again, and i have 1.8t, but its never droped as low as 200, i would say def get an inspection!

Re: Considering buying a wolfsburg, need help.

Sorry, i didnt word that properly. The RPMs drop down by 200, so from about 850 to 650 or 600 not to 200. Thats my fault, sorry for the confusion.

Khyron like you said i think it might be the alternator too, it sounds like most of the sound is coming from there, so i will def look into it.

I might take it to George's tomorrow and hopefully he will have time to give it an inspection.

Any other input would be useful.

To tell you the truth, i really wouldnt know. My car is stock, and that was the first time ive driven a 1.8T, so i got nothing to compare it to.

I think the dipping throttle is common with the 1.8t's. Mine used to to do it, but since running without a maf, not so much.
