    Re: TDI vs. 2.0 & 1.8T

I thought it was quite a bit.

Just looking, the 2006 Jetta manual shows as 5.2 l/100km hwy, 6.6 city.

    I recall the pre-PD models as 4.5 and 6.0 so 13 and 9% reduction.

the point of the pd is thats its supposed to be quieter, more efficient on fuel and pollution. it is quieter a bit, but i have never compared the mileage. its all about the ALH baby!

        Re: TDI vs. 2.0 & 1.8T

The MkV cars are a bit heavier, so that affects the mileage a little. Even on winter diesel I'm getting almost 1000km on a topped up tank if I let it go that far (PD motor, ventectomy was my first mod!).

If I had replied a week or two ago I would have said definitely TDI, but I just spent most of the day replacing a tandem fuel pump and a few coolant lines (not fun). Just make sure you check the service history for proper maintenance and to see if it's had any specific problems in the past. And for sure spend some time at tdiclub.com

On a TDI mileage note......When I first got my TDI (new) I was only getting around 700 km per tank. Once I got about 5000 km on the car the mileage started to climb until I hit about 10000 km were it leveled out at 1000 km per tank (vent mod done) of city driving and around 1300 km all hwy driving. The EPA mileage numbers are always bad for TDI as they are not broken in yet.

When I drive the TDI, I drive it pretty hard and always get around 1100 KM per tank.

No ventectomy, I'm too lazy to do that. So I just vent manually by pushing the vent tab with the nozzle.

So too lazy to remove the vent guts, but not too lazy to manually vent???? So let's see, 30 minutes to remove the guts forever versus having to stand there taking extra time to fill up while being forced to hold the fuel nozzle at every fill up in the future.

I think you need to rethink how to be lazy.

i don't mind holding it.. as soon as i step away, some gas jockey steps in and i end up with diesel all over the car...

To be honest - I was expecting that reply... It only takes seconds to vent manually.

If it takes any longer than that - perhaps you don't have the "technique" quite perfected...

The tank fills slower with the vent valve than when the guts are out. And really, it is a 10 minute job to remove them.

Also, I would normally leave it fill and wash the windows. No need to be there holding anything.

I Wouldn't Risk Going Over Over 110,000 Kms On 1 Tbelt. Especially In The Praries. BELT GOES, YOU GET TO BUY YOURSELF A NEW ENGINE... YAY

I drive an 2001.5 1.8t and personally I think I made a mistake by not going TDI. I find the 1.8t really fun to drive, but realistically I think the torque in the TDI is just as good and would be just as fun to drive anyway. I can get about 570 km to a tank, but when every I think I could get over 1000 with a TDI it really bugs me! As an added bonus you change your oil half as much on a TDI! I really think I made the wrong choice!
When you do things right, people won't be sure you've done anything at all.
