  • HELP!! Locking nuts for 96 GTI

    Hi all,

I just bought a 96 GTI and want to replace the control arm, but don't have the socket that unlocks the nut.

    It looks like this...

I just need to borrow the socket long enough to whip off all 4 of them. I've got another set of locking bolts with a socket.

    Let me know,

    Thanks.

I didn't have the key for mine and they were still able to rip 'em off with an impact socket of the 'right' size. If you can't find the key and go to the dealer they'll charge you something like $60 or more for the key and 4 more bolts. If I still had my old car I'd gladly lend you the key.

There are about 15 variations of that socket though.
Someone elses might look the same but its probably different..

Yep, which is why if you want a new 'key' you have to buy the 4 bolts that go with it. I'd try a socket (I think I used imperial) that's slightly smaller than the outer diameter of the bolt. Tap it on with a hammer and the impact gun should take the bolt off.

The dealership should have the complete set of keys and i'm sure they could buzz them off and just put normal lugs on there for you...

I ended up using a deep socket and bashing it on with a sledge hammer. They were surprisingly co-operative after that.

...oh and the dealership would have taken them off......if the car could have driven there. The driver's control arm was pointing kind of backwards.
