i think if you just want the basic features, you can get away with the older shareware version and an ebay cable. the new version needs the new cable that has a dongle in it, which is what the vag-com software looks for for all the features to be available. I think the latest version you d/l from rosstech requires a cable with a dongle... maybe...

Rosstech no long updates the old software. Therefor to use the latest software you have to have a adapter with a dongle built in (key and new hex series). You can scan and clear codes with the shareware version but that is about it.

It is built into the price now. Ross-tech wanted to stop people from pirating their software and that was the best way to do it. Really I don't blame them.
