  • flywheels, steel or aluminum?????

well im getting a vr6 clutch for my 2000 1.8t and i jsut need to puck up a g60 flywheel and i was wondering what the differences and benefits are of going with a steel flywheel vs. an alumium one? its $420 for the alumium and $350 for the steel so other than price what are the differences???

I believe the weight determines how fast the RPMs drop when you put the clutch in. I find stock is too slow so I will get something lighter. I wasn't aware that if I want stock its steel, and light it's aluminum though.

even the steel ones are light i think they are about 14 against stocks 21 (lbs i think), aluminum drop to like 8. or so i understand it after doing too much reading on it. turned out after spending ages trying to work out which to get i talked to george n he just said 'oh yeah got em in stock done deal" lol.

he has the steal ones, my GTI is in there right now getting one put in yay

You will have to shift faster with a lighter wheel, and more precisely, or your shifts will feel rough. The dual mass wheel (if you had one stock) also makes it easier and smoother to shift.

The 8lbs flywheel will make more noise then the 14lbs steel, when the car is running and not it gear, and the rev's do drop very fast with a light flywheel. My car has the steel G60 flywheel with a spec stage 3 6 puck and it makes lots of noise cause of the clutch and with the VR6 clutch it was just like stock feel.

jsut got mine back from george today with the new clutch, steel flywheel n vr6 setup. feels great quite light with an obvious biting point, cant say if it was like stock coz my stock was runined when i got the car but it feels real good to me.

How much all in if you don't mind me asking? I've heard 1000 parts+labour outside a dealer.
