  • Brake Kits

I need to replace the pads and rotors on my car at its next service so I thought I'd get some larger drilled rotors rather than replacing them with OEM items.

Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced kit? I've been looking at the big Porsche Brake kit that ECS tuning sells but it's a wee bit pricey. I'd be looking to spend no more than $1000.

    Thanks!

Chris, you might want to think about sticking with stock. It seems as though "big" brake kits seldom outperform stock set ups on cars like your gti. They def' look better with larger calipers and drilled rotors, but for the money I'd stick with the factory setup, which is pretty damn good on the 20ae btw.

            That's very true, Chad.

How much do OEM rotors and pads go for anyway? I suppose I could still get some drilled rotors... that might be kinda cool.

New pads, brake fluid and stainless lines will make more performance difference than a big brake kit, thats just for looks.

Aye, this is true... I'm going to have to do some research between now and my next service to decide what to get exactly. In the meantime feel free to post links to stuff I should be checking out!

                Thanks again all!

                          Re: Brake Kits

depends.. rotor size isn't everything.. depends on how many pistons are in the calipers.. 8 will grip like a mofo.. 4 is killer.. 2 is great, 1 is soso

                            Re: Brake Kits

its all about the looks really, big brakes are pretty much baller status, unless you are running mad hp, even then 8 piston calipers are hardcore to the max. Pretty much looks.

There are many threads on vortex about this, pretty good reads.

                              Re: Brake Kits

cause you know....swept area, pad area, piston diameter, applied pressure, and the brake bias have nothing to do with anything right?

No doubt more pistons is better, size of the pistons is very important as well. There are also drawbacks though....look at the evolve c30 which had something like 16 pistons and would never heat up enough to be effective. Pad composition is also very important in how "good" your brakes are, racing pads aren't really the best for city driving. I don't know about you but I definately like the feel my car stopping.
