  • Northland + Aftermarket Stereo

Has anyone else had Northland refuse to diagnose a MIL (check engine light) if you have had an after market stereo installed? Currently they are refusing to diagnose the MIL in my wife's 2000 Beetle because it has an after market stereo. They are saying that it can damage their diagnostic computer.

Yes. Any VW dealership in town will tell you this. If it wasn't installed properly, then yes, it can damage their computer equiptment. Get yourself a membership here at NewVeeDub and we will clear that code for you. NewVeeDub is in the process of purchasing a VAG-COM (something close to what the dealership uses to clear codes and what not).

Memberships are the same for everyone no matter where you live. $30 for the basic and $35 if you want one of the forthcoming NewVeeDub T-Shirts.

The membership gives you some NVD stickers and discounts at Fifth Ave VW Parts, Upsolute, My Tires and C1 plus soon access to the NVD Vag-Com.

as far as the aftermarket stereo aslong as your CAN+ CAN- wires aren't hooked up or the K+ K- on 02.5 and unders they Dealers VAG should be fine.. I don't want to have to remove my deck when I go in for service its way to tight already too much wires..

Personally... when I perform stereo installs I always make sure any "communication" wire is disabled when dealing with cars that still have warranties, etc. Luckily I have friends at dealerships, and they trust me, so I don't get hassled for ******** like this -- but seriously... don't worry about codes or anything like that -- we can clear them just as good as the dealership can!

I got my stereo installed up at Soundsaround in crowfoot. The installer drives a 02 TDI and said he's done a zillion VW's before. I trusted him, he did a great job on mine. So if they hassle I'll tell them who installed it.
BTW doesn't you CEL come on after removing the maf a few times but your battery must be connected right? I think I'm gonna buy a Bentley CD or paper.

You do realize that the VAG-COM allows you to clear AND check the code don\'t you? Wanna change your alarm settings or disable the pinch protection on the windows... done.

It\'s more then a "clearing" device!

Unfortunately the deck was installed in my wife's Beetle prior to our purchase of it. Thanks for the information though. How do I go about becoming a member? Also, is their anyway I can avoid these hassles in the future, as I am thinking of installing a system in my 03 GLI.

Maybe we can figure out some way to have the dealership certify that the wire isn't connected, like if we show them the wiring harness once?
