Headlight/Key Reminder...Working Right?

I just had my driver's side door latch/module replaced at a good n' hefty price. It's never worked since I've owned the car, so I don't know what's right and what's wrong. The thing I'm noticing is that if I open the driver's side door with the lights on and the car running, the headlight reminder tone is going off. Am I supposed to get a reminder when the car's running? If the headlights aren't on, the car is running, and I open the door, the 'key reminder' (dinging) goes off. My question is...is this normal functioning, or should I only be getting these reminders if the car is OFF and I open the driver's side door?

how much did you pay for it, couple hundred? i need one too... about the ringing, it depends on the car. mine doesn't ring, some other golfs do. its a stupid thing borrowed from american cars reminding you the door is open, as if you didn't know that. it can probably be disabled in vag-com.

The part itself was $210, and the labor (about 1 hr.) was $80. Too much, in my opinion, but what do ya do?
